Iloisia kierrätys- ja lajittelu-uutisia!

Kiinteistömme on valittu pilottikohteeksi  Aalto CRE:n järjestämään muovipakkausten erilliskeräykseen. Tavoitteena on parantaa kierrätysastetta ja näin pienentää jätehuollon hiilijalanjälkeä sekä jätehuoltokustannuksia. Samalla myös lajittelu yksinkertaistuu.

Huomioithan, että muovipakkausten erilliskeräys muuttaa lajittelua:

Kiinteistön energiajäteastia säilytetään yritysmuoveja sekä puujätettä varten. Uudet jätejakeet, kuluttajamuovipakkaukset ja kartonki, lajitellaan jatkossa omiin astioihinsa.

Näiden keräyspisteet löytyvät talon sisältä taukotilojen yhteydestä. Kierrätettäviä muovipakkauksia ovat lähes kaikki muovin kuluttajapakkaukset, kuten eväsrasiat, kertakäyttöruokailuvälineet ja muovipussit. Paperisia etikettejä esimerkiksi jugurttipurkkien ympäriltä ei tarvitse poistaa, mutta huuhtelethan epäpuhtaudet muovipurkeista pienellä määrällä kylmää vettä.

Kartonkiin kuuluvat esimerkiksi kertakäyttökahvikupit ja kauppojen salaattibaarien kartonkiastiat.

Keräyksen yhteistyökumppanina ovat L&T ja Fortumin muovinkeräyslaitos. Kierrätetystä muovista valmistetaan muun muassa kastelukannuja, kukkalaatikoita, ämpäreitä ja saaveja.

Pilotti kestää vuoden 2019 loppuun asti. Tarkoituksena on myöhemmin laajentaa kokeilu pysyväksi ratkaisuksi koko kampukselle.

Positive recycling news!

Our building has been selected to take part in a pilot for recycling plastic packaging material organised by Aalto CRE. The aim is to encourage recycling, reduce our carbon footprint and minimise management costs. Sorting waste will be made easier as well.

Please note that the collection of plastic packaging waste will change how waste should be sorted:

The energy waste bin will remain for plastic waste from businesses and waste wood.  Two new waste bins will take the energy waste bin’s place: one for plastic packaging and one for recycling cardboard.

The bins are located inside the building near the break room. Most consumer packaging, such as lunch containers, disposable utensils and plastic bags, can be recycled. There is no need to remove, for example, the paper labels around yoghurt cups. However, please do rinse the packaging with a small amount of cold water, if there is any food residue etc. in them.

The cardboard recycling bin is intended for things like cardboard coffee cups or cardboard food containers from salad bars.

More detailed sorting instructions can be found near the waste bins.

The collection is organised in cooperation with L&T and Fortum’s Plastic Refinery. Recycled plastic is used to make watering cans and other plastic garden products, for example.

The pilot will be ongoing until the end of 2019. Later on, the aim is to extend the pilot to be a permanent part of waste management throughout the campus area.

It is a strange feeling to know that finally the effort of years is paying-off and your studies are officially over; to me, this means no more exams, studying, or homework… ever. As good as feeling as this is, the feeling of melancholy is inevitable. I studied the larger part of my degree at Design Factory and Startup Sauna, therefore celebrating my graduation at the neighbor’s was suitable; While I never spent nearly as much time at Urban Mill as I did the others, they are all somehow an alternative family within Otaniemi.

The party started a few days earlier when we started planning the event; we were expecting close to 70 people, 30 of which would join a family/adult dinner of which around 15 would join 40 friends at a later dance party. In the end, this was quite accurate, and we peaked at around an estimated 65 guests. The dinner party included Mexican food mixed with side-dishes, salads, appetizers, and some bubbly-wine which was prepared beforehand and served to the guests after a small toast from a few brave ones. The dance party focused more on music, lights, and a good atmosphere.

Among the guests were close family members, distant relatives, Mexican relatives, friends from my degree, from other degrees, from other schools, and from random origins. This mixture worked amazingly as we saw people from different origins mingling with each other. The food was widely appreciated and the dancefloor had people dancing Latin music, oldies, and house. It is necessary to mention that this party would not have been as big a success as it was without the help of Aalto Takeout who gladly lent us a set of party lights and a massive set of stereo speakers and subwoofer which gave us that punch we needed.

We had the possibility to reorganize the space as we wanted but we chose to keep most things as they were. The way the Urban Mill is distributed allows us to have many different little spaces for people to sit at which somehow give the feeling of a lounge bar with a somewhat industrial touch to it. The dance floor was set on the stage, lights shining from the floors above, and a large cloakroom set at the entrance, perfectly replicating a dance club.

HAMK’s master students learning from business experts at Urban Mill

On a sunny Friday 27.4.2018, Urban Mill got visitors from Häme University of Applied Sciences (HAMK), when its students from the Master’s degree programme in Business Management and Entrepreneurship spent the last contact day of their spring semester in Otaniemi.

During the day, the students had the pleasure of listening to lectures from experts from very varied fields of business. Lars Miikki from Urban Mill was kind enough to tell the story and mission of the Urban Mill Innovation Platform (Public-Private-People-Partnership), and Mikael Virkki came to give a lecture about the global operations of Business Finland. Teijo Räsänen and Tommi Gustafsson from Innotiimi International Ltd Oy talked about their company, change leadership and the many different styles of leadership with real life examples, and Perttu Karjalainen from Entocube gave a lecture about the global environmental problems the food industry causes, and gave an introduction into a possible solution: edible insect farming.

All of the subjects were very interesting and got a lot of discussion going on among the students. None of the lecturers was spared from sharp questions. The students got real treats, since Perttu from Entocube brought some tastings from their own production: crickets! How yummy! For lunch, the students visited the beautiful Fat Lizard restaurant and bar, which was conveniently in a walking distance. There they enjoyed a company introduction and a buffet – and also some more crickets.

At the end of the day, the students had a workshop, where they discussed the day’s topics and presented their own ideas and thoughts about change management and modern trends in food industry.

All of the students enjoyed the day at Urban Mill greatly, and the facilities got many praises for their innovative and refreshing atmosphere. The students were impressed also on the fact that the surrounding Otaniemi is full of companies with the same start-up mindset as Urban Mill. Lars Miikki mentioned at least Urban Mill’s neighbours at Otaniemi Innovation Alley: Startup Sauna and Aalto Design Factory with all its innovative students. Such a creative place!

The relationship between fear of failure and entrepreneurs’ well-being examined through procrastination in Master’s thesis by Kasper Suomalainen

ABSTRACT: The purpose of this thesis is to examine fear of failure, procrastination and wellbeing in entrepreneurs by studying the relationship between the variables through quantitative research methods. This paper focuses on (1) defining and scoping procrastination and fear of failure and how these relate to well-being, (2) forming 3 hypotheses based on existing literature, and (3) finding out how fear of failure, procrastination and well-being interact with one another. This was done through surveying 71 entrepreneurs through a questionnaire.

The study found out that (1) fear of failure is negatively related to subjective wellbeing, (2) fear of failure is positively related to procrastination, and (3) procrastination does not moderate the relationship between fear of failure and subjective well-being in a statistically significant way.

The biggest limitation in this domain is that existing literature involves multiple perspectives, definitions and measures of the construct of fear of failure, and the fact that procrastination is only measured on a general level with no real categorization.

TIIVISTELMÄ: Tämän gradutyön tarkoitus on tutkia epäonnistumisen pelkoa, viivyttelyä (procrastination) sekä hyvinvointia yrittäjissä analysoimalla näiden muuttujien keskenäisiä suhteita kvantitatiivisesti. Työ keskittyy (1) määrittelemällä epäonnistumisen pelon ja viivyttelyn liittämällä nämä hyvinvointiin, (2) kolmen hypoteesin muodostaminen olemmassaolevan kirjallisuuden pohjalta ja (3) tutkimalla miten epäonnistumisen pelko, viivyttely sekä hyvinvointi vaikuttavat toisiinsa. Tämä tehtiin kvantitatiivisen tutkimuksen kautta johon osallistui 71 suomalaista yrittäjää.

Tutkimuksen aikana selvisi, että (1) epäonnistumisen pelolla on negatiivinen vaikutus hyvinvointiin, (2) epäonnistumisen pelolla on positiivinen korrelaatio viivyttelyn kanssa ja (3) viivyttely ei moderoi epäonnistumisen pelon ja subjektiivisen hyvinvoinnin suhdetta tilastollisesti merkitsevästi.

Suurin haaste tutkimuksen saralla on se, että epäonnistumisen pelkoa tutkitaan monesta eri perspektiivistä eri määritelmillä ja mittareilla, ja viivyttelyä tutkitaan yleisellä tasolla ilman kategorisointia.

Design-hackathon DASH tuo 200 osallistujaa Otaniemeen ratkomaan yhteiskunnallisia haasteita

Dash on lajissaan Euroopan suurin Design-hackathon. Se tuo 200 lahjakasta osallistujaa Otaniemeen 3.-5.11. ratkomaan mielenkiintoisia, yhteiskunnallisesti merkittäviä haasteita poikkitieteellisissä tiimeissä. Kaikki Dashin osallistujat perehdytetään design thinkingin, eli erityisesti käyttäjälähtöisen suunnittelun saloihin, ja heitä kehotetaan tekemään jo ennen hackathonin alkua hieman taustatutkimusta haasteisiin liittyen. Näin varmistamme, että hackathonissa kehitetyt lopputuotokset vastaavat oikeasti ihmisten ongelmiin.

Dashissa on viisi eri Field of Designia, eli erilaista haastetta, jotka liittyvät mm. uudenlaisen akateemisen oppimisympäristön kehittämiseen tai ihmisten ötököistä valmistettuun ruokaan liittyvien ennakkoluulojen poistamiseen. Osallistujat jaetaan 5-6 hengen tiimeihin, ja heillä on 48 tuntia aikaa määrittää ongelmien perimmäiset syyt ja kehittää ratkaisut annettuihin haasteisiin.

Viikonlopun aikana osallistujat pääsevät myös kuulemaan mielenkiintoisia puheita, osallistumaan workshoppeihin sekä tapaamaan yrityksien edustajia ja alan huippuja. Upeat puitteet tapahtumalle tarjoavat Startup Sauna, Urban Mill ja Design Factory, kolme vanhaa teollisuushallia jotka nykyään muodostavat Otaniemen startup-elämän keskuksen.

Platonics Ark, the world’s first 3D printer for architects brings scale models back to daily design work

The revolutionary 3D printer is designed especially to make architects’ everyday life easier, faster, and more creative. Platonics Ark is a result of years of background research and development done together with architects and architecture offices.

The core mission of Platonics Ltd. is to make 3D printing easy, efficient and fast for architects, and other 3D printing enthusiasts. Julio Tiusanen, CEO and Co-founder of Platonics comments: “We at Platonics don’t think architects should adapt to 3D printing, but 3D printing should adapt to architecture. We want to help architects better communicate about their design concepts so that people from different backgrounds can easily comprehend projects.”

One of the core features, which make 3D printing so smooth with Platonics Ark is that it reduces the amount of processes required before the actual printing. Moving from file to print takes just four steps with the Platonics software. In minutes it turns CAD files into 3D printable STL files with no pre-processing; a process, which could otherwise take up to 10 hours of manual work. The software allows for printing directly from Archicad, Revit, Rhino, Vectorworks and Sketchup.

Adding to the easiness of the software, the maintenance of Platonics Ark has been reduced to a minimum. Its self-cleaning and self-calibrating printer, and easily replaceable modular design, spares the user from messy cleaning and handling clogged parts.

The research & development of Platonics Ark has included 1,027 conversations with architects all over the world and an intensive piloting period with the leading architecture offices in Finland, including Ala Architects, JKMM, Lunden Architecture Company, Serum Architects Ltd., Verstas, and Studio Puisto.

Our honorable panel of judges includes, for example, the seasoned Mike Bradshaw from Solu Machines and investor Jakob Storå from Superhero Capital. They will determine who wins private consulting from the judges to boost their company further and learn a thing or two.

Food, drinks and networking will also be served after the competition. We only have room for eight startups to present their idea and receive valuable feedback for their product so apply quickly and prepare your three-minute pitch!

Startup Life on suomalaisten opiskelijoiden yrittäjyysmielisyydestä kummunnut ohjelma, joka tarjoaa mahdollisuuden opiskelijoille tai vastavalmistuneille kastautua startupien työmaailmassa. Ohjelmaa on toteutettu nyt viisi vuotta lähettämällä suomalaisista opiskelijoista parhaat harjoittelemaan kalifornialaisissa startupeissa.

Startup Life tarjoaa vuoden 2017 alusta globaalien startup-henkisten talenttien vaihdon suomalaisille startupeille:

”Tarjoamme Aasian taitavimmille opiskelijoille ja vastavalmistuneille mahdollisuuden työskennellä suomalaisissa startupeissa. Teemme yhteistyötä mm. Oppia robottibussikokeiluun Otaniemestä

kohtaaminenEspoon Otaniemen robottibussikokeilu saatiin onnistuneesti päätökseensä viime viikolla. Aikaisemmin kesällä Helsingin Hernesaaressa tehtyyn kokeiluun verrattuna saatiin erilaisia kokemuksia siitä, miten robottibussit liikkuvat liikenteen seassa, miten ihmiset niihin suhtautuvat ja mitä bussien mahdollinen liikennöinti tulevaisuudessa jollain vakituisella reitillä vaatii.

Otaniemen reitti oli mutkainen, kapeillakin teillä kulkeva ja hitaamman liikenteen alueella toimiva, joten kokemuksia muun muassa kevyen liikenteen kohtaamisesta saatiin kerättyä varsin mukavasti. Oli myös erittäin mielenkiintoista huomata kuinka alueen muut toimijat varsin nopeasti oppivat toimimaan yhteistyössä robottibussin kanssa ja osasivat ottaa huomioon muun muassa muuttuneet liikennejärjestelyt.

Bussit otettiin jo heti alkujaan mielenkiinnolla vastaan, eikä reittiä vielä ollut edes avattu, kun innokkaimmat yrittivät jo hypätä bussien kyytiin. Design Factoryn, Urban Millin ja Startup Saunan kokonaisuus oli operointialueena mielenkiintoinen, sillä kävijäprofiili vaihteli opiskelijaporukoista kiinnostuneisiin lapsiperheisiin ja aina korkean tason valtiovierailuihin asti – Liettuan presidenttikin sai nauttia robottibussin tasaisesta kyydistä! Inspiroivassa korkean teknologian ympäristössä myös kokeilijayrityksemme ja hankekumppanimme pääsivät mukavasti tekemään kokeilujaan reitillä.

robottibussikylttiErinomaisesta vastaanotosta huolimatta Otaniemen kokeilu jouduttiin päättämään hieman suunniteltua aikaisemmin, jotta bussit ehtivät liikennöidä vielä Hervannassa Tampereen teknillisen yliopiston kampusalueella ennen lumien tuloa – Hervantaan bussit siirtyivätkin tämän viikon alussa uuden reitin tekoa varten. Suunnitelmissa on kuitenkin palata takaisin Otaniemeen ensi vuonna heti kevään tultua jatkaen SOHJOA-projektin tavoitteita, löytämällä kokeilujen kautta kaupunkiliikenteen sujuvuuden, turvallisuuden sekä matkustajien käyttökokemuksen kannalta parhaat lähitulevaisuuden sovelluskohteet automaattibusseille.
