”My name is Aliaksei Zanouski. I am an architect and a student at the Urban Studies and Planning master program at Aalto University. During Urban Mill’s Otaniemi recycling days in December 2020, I had an interesting and fruitful discussion with Lars Miikki, co-founder and co-producer at Urban Mill. This occasional meeting reminded me of importance to be in the same space for networking and how casual small talk leads to an interesting discussion. I want to share with you some highlights of our conversation.”

Connective individual actions through social media networks

In August as a response on fraudulent elections mass protests swept across Belarus demanding democracy and end of the 26-year authoritarian rule of Alexander Lukashenko. Despite a shocking amount of violence used against peaceful demonstrators, protests keep going since August. Media write a lot about Belarus recently. However, what is missing from international media coverage is an inner dynamic of the uprising which could be interesting to those who are interested in urbanity.

Like many other recent social movements uprising in Belarus could be categorized as a connective action. Coordination almost absent, the role of political parties and structures wasn’t significant. The movement was based on personalized content sharing across social media networks. Leaderless action without a defined political structure seems more sustainable against the repressive machine in a short term. Nevertheless, in most cases we know, connective action cannot sustain in a long run. Movements built on a mostly virtual ‘weak tie’ networks failing to get offline and build their own political structures. Is it the case in Belarus?

Get to know the Aalto Sustainable Business Club!

We recently organized our first event at Urban Mill this year – Get to know SBC – to expand the idea of Sustainable Businesses to more students. If you missed the event, here’s a short summary about what we do:

The Sustainable Business Club (SBC) is a vibrant community of students enthusiastic about sustainability. We were relaunched in the beginning of 2019 and currently have about 300 members. We organize various events, such as company excursions, panel discussions and movie nights. Our aim is to connect students with like-minded people as well as interesting organizations. We encourage multidisciplinarity, welcoming students from all fields with a passion for sustainability. Our aim is to make SBC more accessible, lead by example, and make sustainability more fun.

The Get to know SBC event was a success, with people attending from various backgrounds. We spoke about the club, ideated about weird sustainable startups, brainstormed on new designs for the club, learnt about energy, and had a fun time getting to know each other with good vegan food.

As our location partner, Urban Mill – with its focus on innovation – is a perfect collaborator. With the speed at which the world is progressing, in both good and bad ways, we need to be able to innovate and realign our paths quicker than ever before. SBC is built from a need to innovate, and Urban Mill is building an ecosystem of innovators. We’re looking forward to strengthening our collaboration and creating greater value for everyone involved.

Aalto-yliopiston suositus maskien käytöstä kampuksella

Hyvät aalto-yhteisön jäsenet,

Viranomaisten laajennetun maskisuosituksen pohjalta Aalto-yliopisto suosittelee maskin käyttöä kampuksen sisätiloissa 1.10. alkaen ellei ole erityistä terveydellistä syytä olla käyttämättä maskia. Tietoa kasvomaskeista ja niiden käytöstä löytyy THL:n sivuilta. 

Maskia suositellaan käytettäväksi erityisesti sellaisissa tilanteissa, joissa turvavälejä ei voida varmistaa, esimerkiksi yleisissä tiloissa joissa on muita ihmisiä. Rajatussa tilassa, jossa ei ole muita ihmisiä, ei maskia tarvitse käyttää.  

Kampuksella työskenneltäessä ja opiskeltaessa on jokaisen huolehdittava riittävistä turvaetäisyyksistä ja hyvästä käsihygieniasta. Jokainen on omalta osaltaan vastuussa omasta, mutta myös muiden turvallisuudesta kampuksen sisätiloissa toimiessaan. Jos sinulla on flunssan, influenssan tai muun tarttuvan taudin oireita, on syytä pysyä kotona.

Aalto University’s recommendation on mask use on campus

Dear members of the Aalto community,

Based on the broadened mask recommendation from Finnish authorities, Aalto University recommends the use of masks in indoor spaces on campus starting 1 October. Exceptions can be made for health-related reasons. Information on masks and their use can be found on the Finnish institute for health and welfare’s (THL) website.

We recommend using masks particularly in situations where social distancing cannot be ensured, such as in public spaces where there are other people. In a confined space where there are no other people, there is no need to use a mask.

While working and studying on campus, each person must take care to maintain appropriate distance from others and good hand hygiene. Everyone is responsible for their own safety, but also for the safety of others when working indoors on campus. If you have symptoms of a cold, flu or another contagious disease, please stay home.

Led by the president, the CMT includes the head of security and risk management and director of communications, as well as other key Aalto staff as necessary. The CMT follows the coronavirus situation, keeping in close contact with authorities and formulating measures to be taken by the university, while also making use of the situational assessment of Finnish authorities and expert opinions.

Tikkurila at Urban Mill 25.-26.4.2019 – Innovating More Sustainable Future

Cross-functional group of Tikkurila employees were gathered together at Urban Mill for a two-day bootcamp on the 25th and 26th of April. The sponsors of the Innovation Accelerator -program, Tikkurila CEO Elisa Markula and Senior VP of Offering Meri Vainikka, visited also Urban Mill and gave very interesting speeches to encourage us to innovate new sustainable processes, products and services.

Prior to the bootcamp we arranged a global idea competition and the most promising ideas out of 85 good ones were then chosen to be further developed in the bootcamp. There were six 4-6 member teams working on these sustainable topics and developing them into concepts. The work continues in 3 half-day workshops and on the 14th of June there is a pitching event where the winner innovation idea is chosen.

Urban Mill as a place was great for innovation and it was easy to work in teams as there where many places to gather up as a group. Thank you for your hospitality and hopefully we get to come there to innovate again!

Saturday 13, a Teekkari Graduation Party in Mexican Way

It is a strange feeling to know that finally the effort of years is paying-off and your studies are officially over; to me, this means no more exams, studying, or homework… ever. As good as feeling as this is, the feeling of melancholy is inevitable. I studied the larger part of my degree at Design Factory and Startup Sauna, therefore celebrating my graduation at the neighbor’s was suitable; While I never spent nearly as much time at Urban Mill as I did the others, they are all somehow an alternative family within Otaniemi.

The party started a few days earlier when we started planning the event; we were expecting close to 70 people, 30 of which would join a family/adult dinner of which around 15 would join 40 friends at a later dance party. In the end, this was quite accurate, and we peaked at around an estimated 65 guests. The dinner party included Mexican food mixed with side-dishes, salads, appetizers, and some bubbly-wine which was prepared beforehand and served to the guests after a small toast from a few brave ones. The dance party focused more on music, lights, and a good atmosphere.

Among the guests were close family members, distant relatives, Mexican relatives, friends from my degree, from other degrees, from other schools, and from random origins. This mixture worked amazingly as we saw people from different origins mingling with each other. The food was widely appreciated and the dancefloor had people dancing Latin music, oldies, and house. It is necessary to mention that this party would not have been as big a success as it was without the help of Aalto Takeout who gladly lent us a set of party lights and a massive set of stereo speakers and subwoofer which gave us that punch we needed.

We had the possibility to reorganize the space as we wanted but we chose to keep most things as they were. The way the Urban Mill is distributed allows us to have many different little spaces for people to sit at which somehow give the feeling of a lounge bar with a somewhat industrial touch to it. The dance floor was set on the stage, lights shining from the floors above, and a large cloakroom set at the entrance, perfectly replicating a dance club.

The use of the facilities at student-friendly price was offered by Urban Mill and TEK’s Uusimaa Regional Office, which jointly develop and pilot new types of community space services in the Otaniemi area.

Triplamaisterijuhlat 22.9.2018 Urban Millillä

Urban Mill tarjosi kattavat puitteet järjestää kolmen maisteritutkinnon verran juhlia Otaniemen sydämessä, tilat olivat helposti muunneltavissa juhlakäyttöön.

Molemmat olivat opiskelleet viimeiset maisterin tutkintonsa Otaniemessä ja kokivat tärkeäksi juhlistaa valmistumista opiskelukavereiden ja muiden ystävien ympäröimänä Otaniemessä. Valitsimme Urban Millin juhlapaikaksi tilojen monipuolisuuden ja opiskelijaystävällisen hinnoittelun perusteella.

Juhlaan saapui n. 80 vierasta. Tarjolla oli erilaisia kakkuja ja muuta makeaa tarjoilua. Illalla valmistettiin gourmé hot dogeja, joiden valmistelu onnistui vaivattomasti keittiötiloissa. Koko juhlien ajan näytettiin videoita, joiden näyttäminen onnistui hyvin tilassa olevalla videotykillä.

Juhlien järjestäminen kävi vaivattomasti, tilaan pääsi ennakkoon tutustumaan ja suunnittelemaan juhlia.

DIGIJOUJOU-hankkeessa kehitetään digipedagogiikkaa kielten ja viestinnän opetukseen ja oppimiseen

DIGIJOUJOU-hankkeen seminaaripäivä Urban Millissä alkoi Maurice Forgetin innostavalla alustuksella ARISin ja pelillistämisen maailmaan. Urban Mill tarjoaa loistavan ympäristön toimintamallin ’ideasta innovaatioon’ (ks. hundred.org) yhdessä kehittelyyn ja toteutuksen miettimiseen nyt hankkeen toisen toimintavuoden alkaessa.

Aalto yliopiston koordinoimassa DIGIJOUJOU-hankkkessa on mukana 52 ruotsi ja suomi toisena kielenä opettajaa 4 yliopistosta ja 8 ammattikorkeakoulusta. Hanke on OKM:n rahoittama korkeakoulutuksen kärkihanke.

Hankkeessa on tavoitteena luoda kotimaisten kielten opetukseen ja ohjaukseen uudenlaista digipedagogiikkaa. Hanketta koordinoivat Heidi Rontu (Aalto) ja Taina Juurakko-Paavola (HAMK).

Yhteiset valmistujaisjuhlat 7.4.2018 Urban Millillä

Illan teema oli Black & White, joka näkyi osallistujien pukeutumisessa sekä tarjoiluissa. Urban Mill tarjosi loistavat ja helposti muunneltavissa olevat tilat, joihin saatiin luotua sekä mukavia oleskelunurkkauksia että tanssilattia. Lisäksi yksi rajatuista tiloista toimi paikkana valokuvaukselle.

Molemmat juhlakalut ovat aloittaneet opintonsa biotuotekniikan koulutusohjelmassa; Noora vuonna 2011 ja Katri 2012. Samasta koulutusohjelmasta huolimatta suuntautumiset ovat olleet erilaiset. Nooralle oli selvää alusta lähtien, että hän haluaa opiskella ympäristöasioiden hallinnan pääainetta. Kandivaiheessa Noora työskenteli kesät Suomessa, mutta maisterivaiheessa uramahdollisuuksia avautui niin Japanissa kuin Chilessä. Ennen valmistumista Noora ehti työskentelemään ulkomailla yhteensä puoli vuotta Tokion vilskeessä ja Concepciónin auringon alla. Diplomityön Noora päätyi kuitenkin tekemään Suomessa. Katri taas päätyi ensimmäisten kesätöidensä innoittamina opiskelemaan biojalostamot-pääainetta, joskin opinnot veivät myöhemmin myös perinteisen paperitekniikan pariin. Loppujen lopuksi Katri palasi kuitenkin perinteisen sellutekniikan pariin, ja päätyikin sellutekniikan suunnittelu- ja konsultointitehtävien pariin loppuvuodesta 2017.

Graduation TriUPMh @Urban Mill

Järjestimme lauantaina 9.9 yhteiset valmistujaisjuhlat Urban Millillä. Ajattelimme, että Urban Mill soveltuu tapahtumaamme loistavasti, koska saamme kutsuttua kaikki kaverimme ja valmistumista on kiva juhlistaa tutussa ympäristössä. Ilta sujuikin hupaisissa merkeissä. Ohjelmanumeroina toimivat koriksen kisastudio ja Kahoot-tietovisa valmistuneista, jonka mahdollisti tilan videotykki ja valkokangas.

Valmistuneet Senja Kuokkanen, Joni Salmela ja Ninni Pasanen.

Senja ja Ninni aloittivat opinnot 2010 Biotuotetekniikan opinnoissa ja Joni vuotta myöhemmin. Samasta tutkinto-ohjelmasta huolimatta kaikilla on ollut hyvin erilaiset opinnot. Ninni on muun muassa viettänyt kesän Japanissa ja tehnyt diplomityönsä Englannissa. Senja suoritti koko maisteritutkintonsa Tanskassa ja Ruotsissa. Joni puolestaan on viettänyt yhden syksyn Singaporessa opintojensa aikana ja tehnyt diplomityönsä tuotantotalouden laitokselle.

Espoon ensimmäinen erikoisolut- ja pienpanimofestivaali palaa 1.-2.9. kaksipäiväisenä. Urban Mill piha-alueineen täytyy jälleen maukkaimmista oluista ja maailman parhaista festarikävijöistä! Luvassa on oluita niin Suomesta kuin muualta Euroopasta, musiikkia, olutaiheista ohjelmaa, olutkulttuuria, ruokaa ja tietenkin kaikille käteen sopivat mahtavat Spiegelaun mini-IPA-lasit! Tänä vuonna alue on isompi ja aikaa maistella oluita kokonaiset kaksi päivää.

Ota Olut is back! The first craft beer festival of Espoo comes back as a two day event in 1st and 2nd of September. Urban Mill and the yard will be filled with the tastiest beers and the best festival goers again! There will beers from Finland and Europe, music, beer related program, beer culture, food and the awesome mini-IPA glasses from Spiegelau! This year the venue is bigger and the time to taste the beers is extended to two days.
