Aalto students adding to the biodiversity of Otaniemi – Honey extracted at Urban Mill on Sunday

Honey harvest Sunday 🍯! The Test Site’s little workers finished their part for the season and the produce is ready. We spent a couple of hours at the Urban Mill on 22.8.2021 doing the honey harvesting.

The Test Site Honey started off as part of a project at the ”How to change the world” course about 2 years ago. The project spun off to the Test Site adding to the biodiversity of the area 🌺. The garden group at the site planted plenty of flowers for the bees to pollinate so we have high hopes for some delicious honey 💛.

Are you interested in being a pioneer in a global technology with only a limited number of experts available? What even is 5G and what can be done with it?

The leading summer course on 5G, is now available for experts of all fields, for free. The course is organised as a virtual intensive course on weekdays from 7 to 18 June 2021. The course is organised by Start North, Aalto University and the FITech Universities.

There is a global high demand for understanding in a revolutionary technology, as 5G will impact the society in a whole new way. The course is worth 6 ECTS credits, accredited by Aalto University. We aim for multidiscipline-based learning during the course, combining expertise of all fields. We hope to see you as a part of our course! Prior knowledge on 5G is not required. During the course, you will learn about 5G technology and key applications such as autonomous cars, extended reality content and artificial intelligence. 

As part of the course, students work as groups towards a project work for a leading company or an organisation on how it can leverage 5G technology in its operations. The need is real, as 5G technology makes unprecedented performance and efficiency possible. A good project is not only technical, it should include user-centric design, business-orientation, sustainability measures and solutions to societal issues.

This year’s gala will be organised as a digital only event. 10 prototypes will be showcased by the student teams. The online platform will open on the Monday 10th of May, while the gala itself will be held on Friday 21st of May.

What does this mean?

Well having the platform open well in advance allows visitors to see what presentations, project booths and other activities there are on the platform. You will be able to see all of our students, their profiles, their expertise and which project they belong to. This way visitors can preplan their Gala Day schedule have more effective use of their time.

Come and fall in love with the results of our interdisciplinary Product Development Project teams in the Product Design Gala on 4th of September, at Aalto Design Factory & Urban Mill!

The 12 teams from Aalto University and our partner universities have been working hard for the whole year to complete their design challenges given by industrial companies and other collaborating parties. In the public exhibition, you will have a chance to hear about the teams’ accomplishments and processes, as well as to get familiar with the people themselves together with their amazing prototypes.

This year the teams were sponsored by companies such as: ABB, Airbus, Aurora Propulsion Technologies, CAEN Spa (in collaboration with the University of Manchester), Futudent, GRK (former Winco), Heimdall, HitSeed, Imagine, Logisnext (former Rocla), Trenox, and SkyEcho. In addition, the Aalto teams have been collaborating with students from universities in the Americas, Europe, Asia, and Oceania such as: Javeriana Cali, InovaLab POLI, NYC Design Factory, Thomas Jefferson University, Porto Design Factory, Warsaw Design Factory – INFOX PW, HAMK University of Applied Sciences, RTU Design Factory, Hochschule München, ISDI Mumbai, and Design Factory Melbourne

In addition, in Urban Mill you can

  • explore prototypes and concepts co-created 28.-30.8.2020 by Finnish and Ukrainian teams in the European Design Upgrade (EDU) Hackathon 2020 for Creatives and Startups.
  • experience how mindfulness practices make difference in the state of your mind and learn how mindfulness can support your team. Well experienced, professional mindfulness teacher Erja Lahdenperä, Helsinki Mindfulness will guide 4 different kind of practices á 30 min between 11 am and 13 pm.  –  An innovative mind and good communication work best when there is just a moderate amount of stress, when one feels him/herself safe. This is something that you can improve with mindfulness-meditations.

PS – Visit this event physically only if you are healthy, and remember to take care of good hand hygiene.

Otaniemen lukion opiskelijat kävivät kemian kimppuun kokkailemalla Urban Millissä

Lukion vuosittainen kemian intensiivileiri toteutettiin tällä kertaa Urban Millissä. Kurssin tarkoituksena on tutustua tieteelliseen tutkimuksen tekemiseen ruuanlaittoon liittyvällä projektilla.

Opiskelijat ja opettajat kertovat:

Saavuimme aamulla 9.1. Urban Mill -yhteistyötilaan suorittamaan keittiökemian kurssin kokeellista osuutta. Pikaisen kierroksen jälkeen olimme vakuuttuneita Urban Millin olevan sopiva paikka tutkimuksen tekemiseen, sillä keittiössä oli hyvät työtasot ja maisteluun oli sopivan rauhallinen tila mukavilla tuoleilla.

Kurssimme opiskelijat jaettiin ryhmiin jo ennen joululomaa ja ideoimme silloin molekyyligastronomiaan liittyviä tutkimustöitä. Yksi ryhmä esimerkiksi tutki erilaisten marinadien vaikutusta pihvien mureuteen. Heillä oli mm. hapan ja emäksinen marinadi, joiden tuottamia tuloksia pohdittiin kemian kannalta.

Ryhmillä oli kiinnostavia projekteja, joita muut saivat maistella. Mm. erilaisia karamellikastikkeita, sekä erilaisilla tavoilla paistettuja pipareita. Eräs opiskelija kertoo: “Itse osallistuin tähän kinuskin maisteluun. Voin sanoa, että aika hyviä ne oli.” Pipariryhmän mukaan raaka piparitaikina voitti sokkomakutestin. Illalla pääsimme vielä yhdessä saunomaan ja viettämään iltaa. Osa porukasta osoitti selvää kampusalueelta tarttunutta teekkarihenkeä juoksemalle mereen asti uimaan.

Seuraavana päivänä tilaa hyödynnettiin vielä tutkimuksen raportoinnin viimeistelyyn ja esittämiseen muille. Urban Millissä on loistavat tilat tällaisen kokeellisen ja tutkimuksellisen työn tekemiseen. Tunnelma on rento, ja erilaisia huoneita löytyy. Esimerkiksi eräs ryhmä päätti perustaa leirin erääseen huoneeseen, jossa oli rennot tuolit ja sohva. ”Tuntui kuin olisi omassa autotallissa, todellinen man cave.”
