Urban Mill muuttaa Design Factoryyn 1.10.2021 – Urban Mill moves to Design Factory on October 1, 2021

Kiitämme kaikkia jäseniämme, yhteistyökumppaneitamme, ja asiakkaitamme upeista vuosista 2013 – 2021, jotka olemme saaneet jakaa kanssanne Urban Mill –yhteistoimintatilassa Betonimiehenkuja 3:ssa. Näistä vuosista voisi kirjoittaa tuhansia tarinoita. Ja tarinoita tullaan vielä kokoamaankin! Vaikka yhteinen luomuksemme, Otaniemen rouhein innovaatiopaja, alueen yhteinen ”olohuone” siirtyy nyt historiaan, uutta luova yhteisömme ja sen henki eivät poistu mihinkään. Ne ponnistavat edelleen Otaniemen innovaatiokujalta tulevaisuuteen uuden monipaikkaisen ja hybridin palvelumallimme tukemana ja siivittäminä. Vuoden lopulla juhlistamme sekä mennyttä että tulevaa järjestämällä innovaatiokujalla Get together – tilaisuuden kaikille nykyisille ja entisille mylläreille, joten pysy kuulolla!

We would like to thank all our members, partners, and customers for the wonderful years 2013 – 2021, which we have been able to share with you at the Urban Mill co-working and co-creation platform at Betonimiehenkuja 3. Thousands of stories could be written about these years. And we promise to collect these stories later! Although the roughest innovation space & “living room” in Otaniemi, co-created by all of us together, is now going down in history, our innovative community and its spirit will not go away. They will continue to strive from Otaniemi Innovation Alley to the future, supported and driven by our new multi-location and hybrid service model. At the end of the year, we will celebrate both the past and the future by organizing a Get together event for all current and former millers at Otaniemi Innovation Alley, so stay tuned!

TIEDOTE YHTEISTYÖKUMPPANEILLEMME, JÄSENILLEMME JA ASIAKKAILLEMME – ANNOUNCEMENT TO OUR PARTNERS, MEMBERS AND CUSTOMERS 1.10.2021

Palvelumallimme muuttuessa siirrämme kotipesämme pihan yli naapurimme ja pitkäaikaisen yhteistyökumppanimme Aalto Design Factoryn tiloihin. Uusi osoitteemme on 1.10.2021 lähtien:

Siirrymme uuteen palvelumalliin, koska se vahvistaa mahdollisuuksiamme keskittää voimavaramme entistä paremmin kumppaneidemme ja asiakkaidemme palvelemiseen strategisella painopistealueellamme, joka on edelleen Creative Sustainable City.

Muutoksen taustalla on myös koronapandemia, joka pakotti meidät muuttumaan, sillä kokoontumisrajoitusten myötä oman ison kohtaamistilan operointi ja ylläpito ei enää ollut taloudellisesti kestävällä pohjalla. Business Finlandin myöntämä koronarahoitus mahdollisti uusien palvelujen kehittämisen ja pilotoinnin 2020-2021.

UUSI PALVELUMALLIMME PÄHKINÄNKUORESSA

  • Välitämme Otaniemi-Keilaniemi innovaatioekosysteemin tuottamaa tietoa ja osaamista alueen ulkopuolelle. Fasilitoimme alueen osaajien ja alueen osaamista tarvitsevien toimijoiden yhteisten kehityshankkeiden syntyä sekä fyysisesti että digitaalisesti.
  • Tuemme asiakkaitamme virtuaalitapahtumien järjestämisessä, tuotamme avointa sisältöä yhdessä kumppaniemme kanssa, järjestämme hybridivierailuja alueelle ja fasilitoimme toiminnastamme kumpuvien uusien virtuaalitiimien syntyä ja työskentelyä.
  • Tavoitteenamme on kertoa kattavasti alueen moninaisista mahdollisuuksista, parantaa alueen tutkimus-, kehitys- ja kokeilutoiminnan globaali tarjoutuvuutta ja edistää näin erityisesti kestävää kehitystä tukevien ja luovaa osaamista hyödyntävien uusien yritysten ja yhteisöjen syntyä.

Biotechnology innovations for a circular bioeconomy – Harnessing the world’s underutilized waste streams with microbes

Microbes are well adapted to use various waste streams as feedstock to produce fuels, chemicals, pharmaceuticals and materials. Using the tools of synthetic biology we can further enhance this capability in applications on an industrial scale.

We invite companies, students and researchers from all over the world to participate in the SynbioPower Pitch 2021. This year’s challenge is to find innovative ways to use biological feedstock and waste streams into added-value products, using the tools of synthetic biology and biotechnology. 

We are looking for early and more mature ideas, startups and more mature companies to participate in the call (DL 10.6.). Simple and fast to apply.

We are studying volume and maturity of Finnish synbio/biotech deal flow. We are currently studying the possibility and making plans for a synbio-focused early fund. We need to show the deal flow to understand the feasibility. Therefore, please, apply so that we shall become aware of your case. (Do not mind the maturity of your case and do not disclose confidential information).

The top cases will be selected for coaching and mentoring and feedback and providing connections from June to Sep/Oct. The jury consists of among others Perttu Koskinen (Neste), Rasmus Pinomaa (Kemira), Miika Mähönen (HMD Global), Janne Mieck (European Circular Bioeconomy Fund, Juha Lindfros (Lifeline Ventures). The jury will  select finalists for the final. The final synbio power pitch will happen during Slush 1.12. You have a good opportunity to showcase your idea/company. There is also a small award of 5000 e for the winner of the final. We have also a few Slush tickets for 2.12. to share for the finalists. The final will be a hybrid one – remote & face-to-face (if possible). You can choose how you participate if you are selected among finalists.

HAMK’s master students learning from business experts at Urban Mill

On a sunny Friday 27.4.2018, Urban Mill got visitors from Häme University of Applied Sciences (HAMK), when its students from the Master’s degree programme in Business Management and Entrepreneurship spent the last contact day of their spring semester in Otaniemi.

During the day, the students had the pleasure of listening to lectures from experts from very varied fields of business. Lars Miikki from Urban Mill was kind enough to tell the story and mission of the Urban Mill Innovation Platform (Public-Private-People-Partnership), and Mikael Virkki came to give a lecture about the global operations of Business Finland. Teijo Räsänen and Tommi Gustafsson from Innotiimi International Ltd Oy talked about their company, change leadership and the many different styles of leadership with real life examples, and Perttu Karjalainen from Entocube gave a lecture about the global environmental problems the food industry causes, and gave an introduction into a possible solution: edible insect farming.

All of the subjects were very interesting and got a lot of discussion going on among the students. None of the lecturers was spared from sharp questions. The students got real treats, since Perttu from Entocube brought some tastings from their own production: crickets! How yummy! For lunch, the students visited the beautiful Fat Lizard restaurant and bar, which was conveniently in a walking distance. There they enjoyed a company introduction and a buffet – and also some more crickets.

At the end of the day, the students had a workshop, where they discussed the day’s topics and presented their own ideas and thoughts about change management and modern trends in food industry.

All of the students enjoyed the day at Urban Mill greatly, and the facilities got many praises for their innovative and refreshing atmosphere. The students were impressed also on the fact that the surrounding Otaniemi is full of companies with the same start-up mindset as Urban Mill. Lars Miikki mentioned at least Urban Mill’s neighbours at Otaniemi Innovation Alley: Startup Sauna and Aalto Design Factory with all its innovative students. Such a creative place!
