Valtion Diplomi-insinöörien liitto juhlisti 70 vuotista taivaltaan Urban Millissä 21.5.2015

Valtion Diplomi-insinöörien liitto VDL ry juhlisti 70 vuotista taivaltaan Urban Millissä 21.5.2015. Ohjelmassa oli vuosikokous, ruokaa ja juomaa sekä pienimuotoinen juhlatilaisuus, jossa jaettiin ansiomerkkejä liiton toimijoille sekä tutustuttiin valokuvin aikaisempiin juhliin.

Näissä juhlissa Urban Mill osoitti jälleen muuntautumiskykynsä. Paikka muuntautui sopivaksi näille juhlille ja Urban Caven widescreen oli mukava työkalu niin kokouksessa kuin valokuvahistoriikissa.

Urban Mill valikoitui juhlapaikaksi juhlien yhden sponsorin TEKin kautta. Tilat tarjosivat Urban Mill ja TEKin Uudenmaan aluetoimisto, jotka pilotoivat yhdessä uudenlaisia yhteisötilapalveluita Otaniemen alueella. Kiitokset kaikille sponsoreille.

Valtion Diplomi-insinöörien Liitto VDL ry on perustettu vuonna 1945. Lähes koko toimiaikansa se on ollut neuvottelukelpoinen edunvalvontajärjestö.

Nykyään VDL jatkaa toimintaansa aatteellisena ja ammatillisena yhdistyksenä. VDL tarjoaa jäsenyhdistyksilleen foorumin vaihtaa tietoja ja kokemuksia uudessa edunvalvontajärjestelmässä. Liitto seuraa mm. myös diplomi-insinöörien eri alojen palkkatason kehitystä ja pyrkii kokoamaan ja jakamaan sitä koskevaa tietoa alajärjestöjensä käyttöön.

Student team designs virtual art gallery for Aalto University metro station

A team of Aalto University students have designed a virtual art gallery for the Aalto University metro station, which is currently under construction. The virtual art exhibition is available via smartphone app.  The City of Espoo and Länsimetro Oy commissioned a group of students attending the PdP (Product Development Project) course to design an innovative and interactive application to enhance user experience at the metro station.

The Aalto University metro station is a gate to Espoo Innovation Garden. This Innovation Garden, the largest innovation cluster in the Northern Europe, is located in Otaniemi, Keilaniemi and Tapiola. An innovative and collective approach is central to its operations, and the PdP collaboration is one such example of this.

”We were delighted to have a skilled and versatile team to take on the challenge; a team that represents the professionalism and international attitude that is at the core of our Innovation Garden,” says Tuula Antola, Director for Economic and Business Development.

The team consists of 11 students of various disciplines from eight countries and four continents.

”The project is perfect for the Garden: innovative, trendy and constantly updating itself.”

Länsimetro CEO Matti Kokkinen says that the students’ work shows that the metro stations and Espoo Innovation Garden will be excellent platforms for new solutions emerging when various partners combine their expertise.
”The students had a great attitude, collaborative skills and a wealth of ideas during the project,” praises Kokkinen.

The head of the student team, Pekka Siika-aho says that it was a surprise that the virtual art exhibition was selected from the variety of options.

”The project was a challenge but a fantastic experience – very surprising and unpredictable.”

Virtual art gallery public at the Helsinki Railway Station and Kamppi metro stations until 31.5.2015 and at Urban Mill the whole summer.

You can visit the virtual art gallery at the Product Design Gala where PdP course projects will be showcased. The Out of Sight exhibition opens on Friday 22 May 2015 at Urban Mill in Otaniemi. The exhibition stays there the whole summer.

The exhibition will also be open to the public from Friday until the end of May at the Helsinki Railway Station and Kamppi metro stations as part of HKL’s 70th anniversary art festival, Taidelinja.

The exhibition will feature works from the Touch exhibition selected from the Saastamoinen Foundation collection at EMMA – Espoo Museum of Modern Art. The works offer perspectives of what it means to be a human being. Audiences can consider humanity and being human while interacting with the works of art.

The exhibition will also feature animation and video works by talented Aalto University students; true reality and virtual reality intertwine, revealing secrets behind everyday objects.

The interdisciplinary PdP course has been held at the Aalto University since 1997. Many well-known companies have given commission of their projects to the course participants. This is the first time that the City of Espoo has taken part.

Yhteistyöverkostomme jäsen PolarSol Oy valittiin Horizon 2020 SME Instrument rahoitusohjelmaan!

Tilastojen perusteella jopa 90% kaikesta kotitalouksien energiankulutuksesta menee kiinteistön ja käyttöveden lämmitykseen. Niinpä lämmitysjärjestelmien tehostamisessa piilee valtava säästöpotentiaali. PolarSol on toiminnassaan keskittynyt tämän säästöpotentiaalin valjastamiseen uusiutuvan energian avulla. Nyt yrityksen potentiaali on tunnustettu EU:n tasollakin.

PolarSol Oy on päässyt EU:n Horisontti 2020 pk-instrumentin rahoituksen piiriin. Instrumentti on tarkoitettu voimakasta kansainvälistä kasvua hakeville pk-yrityksille, joilla on korkea markkina- ja kasvupotentiaali. Horisontti 2020 pk-instrumentin avulla EU etsii tulevaisuuden talouskehityksen vetureita. Dr. Bernd Reichert, Head of SME Unit European Commission, vertaa rahoituksen piiriin valittavia yrityksiä Mestareiden Liigan tason huippujoukkueisiin. PolaSol on tuotekehityksessään lähtenyt siitä, ettei yksikään uusiutuvan energian muodoista tarjoa lämpöä tasaisen kustannustehokkaalla tavalla ympäri vuoden. Jokaisella on oma sesonkinsa, jonka aikana se tuottaa energiaa optimaalisella tavalla. Jos arviointikriteerinä pidetään sijoitetun euron tuottama lämpöenergia, voidaan todeta seuraavaa:

  • aurinkolämmitys on erittäin edullista kesällä, mutta täysin hyödytön kylmänä ja pimeänä aikana;
  • maalämpö on edullisimmillaan talvella, mutta todella kustannustehoton kesäaikana;
  • ilmalämpöpumput ovat parhaimmillaan syksyllä ja keväällä, mutta talvella jäätymisongelman takia niistä on pikemminkin riesaa;
  • ainoa vuodenajasta riippumaton uusiutuvan energian lähde on hukkalämmön talteenotto, mutta nykyiset järjestelmät ovat kustannustehokkaita vain teollisessa mittakaavassa.

”Optimoimalla kaikkien energiamuotojen käyttöä vuoden yli voidaan saavuttaa merkittäviä kustannussäästöjä. Toistaiseksi yksikään lämmitysjärjestelmä ei ole kuitenkaan pystynyt tähän. Mutta nyt mahdottomasta on tullut totta. PolarSol on tuonut markkinoille täysin uudentyyppisen hybridijärjestelmän, jossa kaikki edellä mainitut elementit yhdistyvät erittäin kustannustehokkaalla tavalla. PolarSolin järjestelmä pystyykin toimimaan omavaraisena lämmitysmuotona tuottaen edullista energiaa tasaisesti läpi vuoden”, kertoo yrityksen ratkaisuja maailmalle vievä PolarSoilin liiketoimintajohtaja Ilkka Kakko.

Karostech Ltd. was  accepted 12.4.2015 by SonnSe Oy as a certified dealer for PolarSol heat management systems. The agreement is project-based and gives Karostech an exclusive PolarSol dealership in selected pilot projects. PolarSol is a Finnish start-up company and their products are the leading heat management products on the global market at the moment. Maanmittarikillan kaikkien aikojen hallitussitsit Urban Millillä

MK12-2015-05-08Perjantaina 8.5. Maanmittarikillan kaikkien aikojen hallitukset kokoontuivat Urban Millille sitsaamaan. Paikalle tuli noin satapäinen kirjava joukko mittareita eri ikäluokista, vanhin mukana ollut hallitus oli vuodelta 1988. Illan aikana nautittiin herkullisista ruuista ja juomista, muisteltiin menneitä vuosia puheiden muodossa sekä laulettiin paljon.

About TEDxOtaniemiED

The first TEDxOtaniemiED event in Espoo is on Designing for love of learning. It comprises a combination of live presenters and screening of TED Talks videos to spark deep conversation and connections at the local and global level.

What does the theme “Designing for love of Learning” mean?

Finland has a good reputation as a country with a great educational system and a high level of educated workforce. However, we feel that discussions about learning get overshadowed by debates about different educational systems or politics. We believe that learning is fun, learning is empowering, and learning is fundamental to who we are. And most importantly, learning deserves to be discussed in it own terms.

Innovators from Germany experienced Urban Mill and invite to join Smart City Co-creative Network meetups in Berlin

“Last week we accidentally stumbled into Urban Mill (while visiting our design thinking colleagues at Design Factory) to find ourselves in a future vision of our own young startup in Berlin.

We -Tassilo & Mehdi- from SechsGrad do and spark user-centric innovation for smart city projects. Since november we are free to work for ourselves full-time, and our network is constantly expanding, as every week we host an open workshop on a different smart city topic.

So when Lars Miikki received us and showed us around at Urban Mill, we experienced how this approach can lead to such an awesome place of co-creation.

Not only did we gain a lot of self-confidence for our own project from that conversation, but also could enjoy the Finnish way of being friendly, open and efficient at the same time. Kiitos, Lars! It shows in 27 articles what’s happening at this moment —through the work of the authors—but also points to the future, as their work continues within the Energizing Urban Ecosystems re­search program.

This book is a must for anyone interested in understanding how Espoo Innovation Garden functions as an orchestrated regional innovation ecosystem. It is a good illustration of how ecosystems work in practice, presenting the results of many months of cross-border and interdisciplinary teamwork, which is now ready to be shared with a wider public. It is a commendable journey, with many lessons for innovators across Finland and Europe to inspire journeys of their own.

Service design competition organized by Aaltoes attracted young talents to Urban Mill

On 23rd of April, Urban Mill welcomed 30 innovative and young talents in a rapid prototyping workshop and competition organized by Aalto Entrepreneurship Society Aaltoes and sponsored by Fjord.

Participant of this workshop-competition were international and multidisciplinary people who wanted to spend a day, learning how to get real with sketches and ideas and building them in a short time.

Fjord as a service design agency walked participants through the process, from Discovery to Describe and Design. Participants worked on the real service design case of Aurinkomatkat and did their very best to redesign their service in a short time.

At the end of the day, the stakeholder got surprised by the quality of works achieved in a short time and evaluated all the works and selected the best one.

Kim C Korn, Create Advantage Inc. (USA) and Urban Mill at EIT ICT Labs 24.4.2015: Human Centric Management – Regenerative Managing for a digitalizing world

The digitalizing world requires constant focus on creative destruction and exploration – in other words, enterprise regeneration. The newly created Regenerative Managing framework enables organizations to seize this opportunity. Kim C. Korn’s take on regenerative managing takes a very humane view:

”Management needs to adhere human values, something it traditionally doesn’t do. An enterprise is about people and activities (external and internal to the enterprise) working together. People and enterprise should have their abilities, intention and goals aligned. A meaningful purpose is the key for sense of direction.”

Create Advantage Inc. (USA) and Urban Mill (Finland) offered 21.4.2015 an experimental workshop for pioneering organizations interested in learning about becoming regenerative and self-sustaining themselves. We had a group of 20+ multi-talented pioneers co-creating the managing and workshop concept further with Kim.

Later on the week we visited some of our stakeholders and started managament development dialogue with them, including EIT ICT Labs Lunch Speech on Fri 24.4.

Next autumn we’ll open up outcomes of this week to a wider audience. Stay tuned!

Condus ry törmäytti Helsingin yliopiston ja Aallon opiskelijoita juhlatunnelmissa Urban Millissä

Lauantaina 18.4. Urban Mill täyttyi juhlatunnelmasta ja poikkitieteellisestä juhlakansasta.

Helsingin yliopiston käyttäytymistieteellisen tiedekunnan opiskelijoiden yhteistyöjärjestö Condus ry juhli 11. vuosijuhlaansa Ravintola Uunisaaressa, josta juhlakansa siirtyi Urban Milliin tutustumaan tekniikan ihmeisiin.

Condus ry:n arvoja ovat ystävyyden, yhteistyön ja avunannon käsitteet, joita toteutimme tässäkin tapahtumassa. Conduksen tärkein tehtävä on edistää jäsenjärjestöjemme keskinäistä yhteistyötä sekä yhteistyötä Conduksen kanssa. Lisäksi teemme paljon poikkitieteellistä yhteistyötä, sillä on aina virkistävää ja hyödyllistä päästä tutustumaan erilaisiin toimintakulttuureihin.

Tapahtuma Condus X Urban Mill yhdisti opiskelijoita niin Helsingin yliopistosta kuin Aalto-yliopiston eri tiedekunnista ja tieteenaloilta. Jo pelkästään juhlassamme vieraita oli yli 25 eri järjestöstä. Tapahtuma toteutettiin pääyhteistyössä Aalto-yliopiston Tuotantotalouden kilta Prodeko ry:n kanssa.
