Product Design Gala 2015, 22.5.2015 at Design Factory & Urban Mill

Are business, design, engineering or innovations close to your heart?

If yes, or even if this is not the case (yet), you are more than welcome to join the annual Product Design Gala and fall in love with the results of our interdisciplinary Product Development Project -teams!

The teams have been working hard for the whole year to complete their design challenges given by industrial companies and other collaborating parties. In the public exhibition, you’ll have the possibility to get familiar with the teams as well as with their amazing prototypes. So save the date and see you in May!

This year the teams were sponsored by the following companies: ABB, Airbus, Audi, City of Espoo, Comnet/Ericsson, Fortum, GE Healthcare, Innovamo, KONE, Konecranes, Lindström, Norpe, Stalatube, Unicef, Valmet and Wärtsilä.

In addition, we have three student teams working on their own ideas and pursuing their dreams: All Terrain Skateboard, Yonder and Duckter.

TaM Katja Soini väittelee aiheesta Facilitating change: Towards resident-oriented housing modernisation with collaborative design.

Vastaväittäjänä toimii dosentti Juha Kostiainen Tampereen yliopistosta. Kustoksena on prof. Turkka Keinonen muotoilun laitokselta.

Yhteissuunnittelulla voidaan kehittää avoimia ja monimutkaisia järjestelmiä. Sen tavoitteena on luoda vaihtoehtoisia tulevaisuuskuvia, jotka tuovat arvoa yhtälailla yksilöille, organisaatioille kuin yhteiskunnalle. Yhteissuunnittelun tutkimus on tähän mennessä keskittynyt lähinnä menetelmien kehittämiseen. Vähemmälle huomiolle on jäänyt sen hyödyntämisen yksityiskohtainen ja pitkäaikainen arviointi. Tämä väitöstutkimus esittää empiirisen näkökulman yhteissuunnittelun panoksesta systeemiseen muutokseen. Panosta kutsutaan termillä fasilitointi.

Väitöstyö on pitkittäinen tapaustutkimus. Työssä tutkitaan empiirisesti suomalaista korjausrakentamista – erityisesti putkiremonttia – monimutkaisena järjestelmänä ja sen systeemistä muutosta sekä erään yhteissuunnitteluhankkeen roolia muutoksessa. Tutkimusaineisto koostuu projektidokumenteista, seurantahaastatteluista ja muutoksiin liittyvistä dokumenteista sekä tekijän henkilökohtaisesta kokemuksesta projektityössä. Analyysi osoitti, että korjausrakentamisen systeeminen muutos tarkoittaa alan käännettä teknisestä painotuksesta kohti yhteistä tavoitetta – asukaslähtöistä perusparantamista – järjestelmän useilla tasoilla.

Fasilitointi tuotti erilaisia tilaisuuksia ja kohtaamisia asukkaiden ja korjausrakentamisen ammattilaisten kesken sekä tarinallisen kuvauksen yhteisistä tavoitteista. Esiin nousi kolme pääkehityskulkua: asukaslähtöisyys korjausrakentamisen uutena kriteerinä, investointi palvelutarjonnan kehittämiseen, ja asukaslähtöinen perusparantaminen valtion hallinnossa. Fasilitointi sijoitti yhteissuunnittelun muutosta tukevaksi toiminnaksi, korjausrakentamisen ammattilaisten vastatessa muutoksen aloitteesta ja toteuttamisesta.

Arkkitehti Jyrki Tarpion väitöstutkimus Joustavan asunnon tilalliset logiikat: Erilaisiin käyttöihin mukautumiskykyisen asunnon tilallisista lähtökohdista ja suunnitteluperiaatteista kartoittaa erilaisia asunnon tilallisia lähtökohtia ja tilasuunnitteluun liittyviä periaatteita, jotka tuottavat joustavuutta. Tarpio kysyy, millaisia toisistaan poikkeavia tilallisia lähtökohtia joustaville asunnoille on olemassa ja minkälaista joustavuutta nämä lähtökohdat tuottavat.

Väitöstilaisuus järjestetään Tampereen teknillisen yliopiston Rakennustalon salissa RG202 perjantaina 15. toukokuuta 2015 kello 12. Vastaväittäjänä toimii tekniikan tohtori, arkkitehti Lauri Louekari.

Tutkimuksessaan Tarpio erottaa seitsemän joustavan asunnon tilallista lähtökohtaa ja näihin kytkeytyvää suunnitteluperiaatetta. Näitä hän kutsuu joustavan asunnon tilallisiksi logiikoiksi. Logiikat perustuvat joko muunneltavuuteen tai monikäyttöisyyteen, ja ne tuottavat keskenään erilaiset joustavuusominaisuudet. Mikään yksittäinen logiikka ei tuota kaikenkattavaa joustavuutta. Kaikilla logiikoilla on joustavuuden kannalta sekä niille ominaiset mahdollisuudet että rajoitteet. Tilan ei kuitenkaan tarvitse muodostua vain yhdellä logiikalla, vaan logiikoita voi yhdistellä.

Urban planning by Sound Theory at the Researchers’ Breakfast 12.5. at Aalto Service Factory

Join us to talk about urban planning by Sound Theory at The Researchers’ Breakfast on May 12th!

A doctoral student and researcher Olli Hakanen will present his theory on sustainable creative action through a case study: how the introduction of a new system of mobility and a new concept of daily working hours converts a city of 600,000 inhabitants into a metropolis of 4,5 million. We have aslo invited professor Matti Vartiainen from the School of Science and the managing director and reseacher Seppo Laakso from Urban Research Ltd. to join the discussion on the topic.

The breakfast is served at the Service Factory (Töölö) at 8.30-10.30. Olli Hakanen starts his speech at 9:00. You are most warmly welcome to bring a friend – the breakfast event is open for everyone.

KUTSU: Rakentamistalouden kansainvälinen konferenssi Tampereella 28.-29.5.2015

8th Nordic Conference on Construction Economics and Organization

Tampereella järjestetään korkeatasoinen kansainvälinen konferenssi CEO 2015 rakentamistalouden ajankohtaisista asioista. Tapahtuman pääteemana on muutos ja sen johtajuus yrityksessä, alalla ja toimintaympäristössä. Esitelmät jakautuvat pääteeman alla useaan alateemaan kuten tuotannon ohjaus ja johtaminen, yhteistyö ja sidosryhmien hallinta, laadun ja tuottavuuden kehittämisen innovaatiot, käyttöarvo ja sen muodostuminen sekä digitalisaatio ja tietomallintaminen.

CEO 2015 konferenssi on tarkoitettu kaikille alan ja sen liiketoiminnan kehittämisestä kiinnostuneille. Tapahtumaan odotetaan n. 150 osallistujaa ja konferenssiin on hyväksytty 80 esitelmää 16 eri maasta.

Konferenssin järjestäjinä toimivat Tampereen teknillinen yliopisto ja Suomen rakennusinsinöörien liitto ja tapahtuma järjestetään hotelli Rosendahlissa. Konferenssi on englanninkielinen.

Service design competition organized by Aaltoes attracted young talents to Urban Mill

On 23rd of April, Urban Mill welcomed 30 innovative and young talents in a rapid prototyping workshop and competition organized by Aalto Entrepreneurship Society Aaltoes and sponsored by Fjord.

Participant of this workshop-competition were international and multidisciplinary people who wanted to spend a day, learning how to get real with sketches and ideas and building them in a short time.

Fjord as a service design agency walked participants through the process, from Discovery to Describe and Design. Participants worked on the real service design case of Aurinkomatkat and did their very best to redesign their service in a short time.

At the end of the day, the stakeholder got surprised by the quality of works achieved in a short time and evaluated all the works and selected the best one.

Kim C Korn, Create Advantage Inc. (USA) and Urban Mill at EIT ICT Labs 24.4.2015: Human Centric Management – Regenerative Managing for a digitalizing world

The digitalizing world requires constant focus on creative destruction and exploration – in other words, enterprise regeneration. The newly created Regenerative Managing framework enables organizations to seize this opportunity. Kim C. Korn’s take on regenerative managing takes a very humane view:

”Management needs to adhere human values, something it traditionally doesn’t do. An enterprise is about people and activities (external and internal to the enterprise) working together. People and enterprise should have their abilities, intention and goals aligned. A meaningful purpose is the key for sense of direction.”

Create Advantage Inc. (USA) and Urban Mill (Finland) offered 21.4.2015 an experimental workshop for pioneering organizations interested in learning about becoming regenerative and self-sustaining themselves. We had a group of 20+ multi-talented pioneers co-creating the managing and workshop concept further with Kim.

Later on the week we visited some of our stakeholders and started managament development dialogue with them, including EIT ICT Labs Lunch Speech on Fri 24.4.

Next autumn we’ll open up outcomes of this week to a wider audience. Stay tuned!

Condus ry törmäytti Helsingin yliopiston ja Aallon opiskelijoita juhlatunnelmissa Urban Millissä

Lauantaina 18.4. Urban Mill täyttyi juhlatunnelmasta ja poikkitieteellisestä juhlakansasta.

Helsingin yliopiston käyttäytymistieteellisen tiedekunnan opiskelijoiden yhteistyöjärjestö Condus ry juhli 11. vuosijuhlaansa Ravintola Uunisaaressa, josta juhlakansa siirtyi Urban Milliin tutustumaan tekniikan ihmeisiin.

Condus ry:n arvoja ovat ystävyyden, yhteistyön ja avunannon käsitteet, joita toteutimme tässäkin tapahtumassa. Conduksen tärkein tehtävä on edistää jäsenjärjestöjemme keskinäistä yhteistyötä sekä yhteistyötä Conduksen kanssa. Lisäksi teemme paljon poikkitieteellistä yhteistyötä, sillä on aina virkistävää ja hyödyllistä päästä tutustumaan erilaisiin toimintakulttuureihin.

Tapahtuma Condus X Urban Mill yhdisti opiskelijoita niin Helsingin yliopistosta kuin Aalto-yliopiston eri tiedekunnista ja tieteenaloilta. Jo pelkästään juhlassamme vieraita oli yli 25 eri järjestöstä. Tapahtuma toteutettiin pääyhteistyössä Aalto-yliopiston Tuotantotalouden kilta Prodeko ry:n kanssa.

Interesting week ahead!

Kim Korn arrived on Sat to Urban Mill and we will arrange several events together around the theme of Regenerative Managing during this week.

The digitalizing world requires constant focus on creative destruction and exploration – in other words, enterprise regeneration. The newly created Regenerative Managing framework enables organizations to seize this opportunity.

A one-day semi-open workshop will be held tomorrow, on April 21st. Create Advantage Inc. (USA) and Urban Mill offer an experimental workshop for pioneering organizations interested in learning about becoming regenerative and self-sustaining themselves. We have a group of 20+ multi-talented pioneers co-creating the managing and workshop concept further with Kim.

Later this week we’ll visit some of our stakeholders and start managament development dialogue with them, including EIT ICT Labs Lunch on Fri 24.4. 12-13.

Next autumn we’ll open up outcomes of this week to a wider audience. Stay tuned! We’ll tell more during the week.

And why are we doing this?

WHY Conventional Management Does Not Work

Business leaders using conventional management, leadership, and governance find themselves fighting a war on two fronts—one outside their company to be competitive against the ongoing creative destruction, the other inside their company to counteract the pernicious tendency of their company to become mediocre.
