Robottibussit palasivat Otaniemeen

Metropolia Ammattikorkeakoulun luotsaaman SOHJOA-hankkeen robottibussit palasivat Otaniemeen jatkamaan suuren mediahuomion saavuttanutta teknologiakokeilua. Testiajot alkoivat tällä viikolla ja yleisö pääsee lähiaikoina jälleen kokeilemaan kaikille avoimia ja maksuttomia demobussikyytejä.

Bussireitin on kaavailtu kulkevan tänäkin vuonna Innovaatiokujan pysäkiltä (Urban Millin Betonimiehenkujan puoleisen sivuoven vierestä) Aalto-yliopiston entisen päärakennuksen pysäkin ACRE kautta Vuorimiehentien pysäkille Valimo, josta pääsee perinteisten bussien kyytiin. Ja samaa reittiä takaisin.

Platonics Ark, the world’s first 3D printer for architects brings scale models back to daily design work

Platonics Ltd., the Finnish 3D printing company with roots in Startup Sauna and Urban Mill, this week announced the availability of the company’s first product, Platonics Ark. The revolutionary 3D printer is designed especially to make architects’ everyday life easier, faster, and more creative. Platonics Ark is a result of years of background research and development done together with architects and architecture offices.

The core mission of Platonics Ltd. is to make 3D printing easy, efficient and fast for architects, and other 3D printing enthusiasts. Julio Tiusanen, CEO and Co-founder of Platonics comments: “We at Platonics don’t think architects should adapt to 3D printing, but 3D printing should adapt to architecture. We want to help architects better communicate about their design concepts so that people from different backgrounds can easily comprehend projects.”

One of the core features, which make 3D printing so smooth with Platonics Ark is that it reduces the amount of processes required before the actual printing. Moving from file to print takes just four steps with the Platonics software. In minutes it turns CAD files into 3D printable STL files with no pre-processing; a process, which could otherwise take up to 10 hours of manual work. The software allows for printing directly from Archicad, Revit, Rhino, Vectorworks and Sketchup.

Adding to the easiness of the software, the maintenance of Platonics Ark has been reduced to a minimum. Its self-cleaning and self-calibrating printer, and easily replaceable modular design, spares the user from messy cleaning and handling clogged parts.

The research & development of Platonics Ark has included 1,027 conversations with architects all over the world and an intensive piloting period with the leading architecture offices in Finland, including Ala Architects, JKMM, Lunden Architecture Company, Serum Architects Ltd., Verstas, and Studio Puisto.

Platonics Ark is now available for pre-ordering through crowdfunding platform Indiegogo. Product deliveries for Indiegogo backers are targeted to start in April 2018, and full-scale production is set to launch in May 2018. More information on Platonic’s website

Tervetuloa Otaniemen kampukselle kokeilemaan lainattavia potkulautoja!

Urban Millissä toimiva startup-yritys Samocat Sharing pilotoi kolmen kuukauden aikana uudenlaista potkulautojen lainauspalvelua Otaniemessä. Kokeilu päättyy marras-joulukuun taitteessa.

Kampukselle on asennettu kuusi potkulauta-asemaa, joista laudan voi ottaa käyttöönsä. Asemien sijainnin sekä potkulautojen saatavuuden ja palautustilan voi tarkistaa älypuhelimella Applen ja Googlen verkkokaupoista ladattavan ilmisen sovelluksen avulla. Potkulautoja on yli kolmekymmentä ja alle puolen tunnin testikäyttö on maksutonta.

Otaniemi on Samocat Sharingin toinen Euroopassa toteuttama koekäyttöalue. Palvelua testataan myös Moskovassa.

Vuosijuhla jatkui Otaniemen yössä – mylly täyttyi prosessiteekkareista

Prosessiteekkarit ry:n ensimmäisiä puolipyöreitä juhlittiin lauantaina 23.9. Itse vuosijuhlien illallista nautittiin Helsingissä Ravintola Pörssissä, josta bussikuljetukset johdattivat juhlakansan Urban Millille jatkamaan juhlimista. Antiikin Kreikan teemaa pyrittiin tuomaan kultaisin ja valkoisin koristeluin myös jatkoille, joiden varsinaiset puitteet tarjosi Urban Millin Scene.

Tilaan tehtiin loungeja tolppien väleihin, minkä lisäksi tilaa oli runsaasti tanssilattialle, jolla DJ viihdytti juhlakansaa. Lisäksi ulkona vierailla oli mahdollisuus saada grillistä purtaavaa. Väki viihtyi sekä tanssilattialla että rauhallisemmissa loungeissa.

Tilana monipuolinen Urban Mill tarjosi hyvät puitteet onnistuneen juhlapäivän loppuun viemiseen. Hyvä fiilis jatkui aina aamun pikkutunneille asti.

Tilojen käytön opiskelijaystävälliseen hintaan tarjosivat Urban Mill ja TEKin Uudenmaan aluetoimisto, jotka yhdessä pilotoivat uudenlaisia yhteisötilapalveluja Otaniemen alueella.

Järjestimme lauantaina 9.9 yhteiset valmistujaisjuhlat Urban Millillä. Ajattelimme, että Urban Mill soveltuu tapahtumaamme loistavasti, koska saamme kutsuttua kaikki kaverimme ja valmistumista on kiva juhlistaa tutussa ympäristössä. Ilta sujuikin hupaisissa merkeissä. Ohjelmanumeroina toimivat koriksen kisastudio ja Kahoot-tietovisa valmistuneista, jonka mahdollisti tilan videotykki ja valkokangas.

Valmistuneet Senja Kuokkanen, Joni Salmela ja Ninni Pasanen.

Senja ja Ninni aloittivat opinnot 2010 Biotuotetekniikan opinnoissa ja Joni vuotta myöhemmin. Samasta tutkinto-ohjelmasta huolimatta kaikilla on ollut hyvin erilaiset opinnot. Ninni on muun muassa viettänyt kesän Japanissa ja tehnyt diplomityönsä Englannissa. Senja suoritti koko maisteritutkintonsa Tanskassa ja Ruotsissa. Joni puolestaan on viettänyt yhden syksyn Singaporessa opintojensa aikana ja tehnyt diplomityönsä tuotantotalouden laitokselle.

INVITATION: Materials for future designs 13.9.2017 @ Urban Mill

There is an increasing worldwide demand for high-performing materials and their application in sustainable solutions. Solving contemporary challenges is strongly linked to everyday life involving food, packaging, textiles and interiors. Bioeconomy and the industrial use of sustainable chemicals and materials will create growth and wealth and health for our planet.

During the Helsinki Design Week 2017, VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland is organising an open discussion event where we will address the big questions related to the future of materials and their use in the design of novel solutions. During the two-hour event, we will hear interesting keynotes and a series of pitches by the scientists who are developing the materials of the future and seek ideas to their potential use. We will also showcase several demos on the topic and the evening will be concluded with the award ceremony for the winners of The Making of Tomorrow design hackathon organised earlier during the Helsinki Design Week 2017.

Tule kokeilemaan pienpanimoiden erikoisoluita Otaolut 2017 -tapahtumassa Myllyllä pe-la 1.-2.9.

Espoon ensimmäinen erikoisolut- ja pienpanimofestivaali palaa 1.-2.9. kaksipäiväisenä. Urban Mill piha-alueineen täytyy jälleen maukkaimmista oluista ja maailman parhaista festarikävijöistä! Luvassa on oluita niin Suomesta kuin muualta Euroopasta, musiikkia, olutaiheista ohjelmaa, olutkulttuuria, ruokaa ja tietenkin kaikille käteen sopivat mahtavat Spiegelaun mini-IPA-lasit! Tänä vuonna alue on isompi ja aikaa maistella oluita kokonaiset kaksi päivää.

Ota Olut is back! The first craft beer festival of Espoo comes back as a two day event in 1st and 2nd of September. Urban Mill and the yard will be filled with the tastiest beers and the best festival goers again! There will beers from Finland and Europe, music, beer related program, beer culture, food and the awesome mini-IPA glasses from Spiegelau! This year the venue is bigger and the time to taste the beers is extended to two days.
