Open Call: Synbio Power Pitch 2021 dl 10.6.

From our partner network:

Biotechnology innovations for a circular bioeconomy – Harnessing the world’s underutilized waste streams with microbes

Microbes are well adapted to use various waste streams as feedstock to produce fuels, chemicals, pharmaceuticals and materials. Using the tools of synthetic biology we can further enhance this capability in applications on an industrial scale.

We invite companies, students and researchers from all over the world to participate in the SynbioPower Pitch 2021. This year’s challenge is to find innovative ways to use biological feedstock and waste streams into added-value products, using the tools of synthetic biology and biotechnology.

We are looking for early and more mature ideas, startups and more mature companies to participate in the call (DL 10.6.). Simple and fast to apply.

Apply from here: www.synbio.fi/synbio-power-pitch-2021

We are studying volume and maturity of Finnish synbio/biotech deal flow. We are currently studying the possibility and making plans for a synbio-focused early fund. We need to show the deal flow to understand the feasibility. Therefore, please, apply so that we shall become aware of your case. (Do not mind the maturity of your case and do not disclose confidential information).

The top cases will be selected for coaching and mentoring and feedback and providing connections from June to Sep/Oct. The jury consists of among others Perttu Koskinen (Neste), Rasmus Pinomaa (Kemira), Miika Mähönen (HMD Global), Janne Mieck (European Circular Bioeconomy Fund, Juha Lindfros (Lifeline Ventures). The jury will  select finalists for the final. The final synbio power pitch will happen during Slush 1.12. You have a good opportunity to showcase your idea/company. There is also a small award of 5000 e for the winner of the final. We have also a few Slush tickets for 2.12. to share for the finalists. The final will be a hybrid one – remote & face-to-face (if possible). You can choose how you participate if you are selected among finalists.

Welcome to Synbio Powerhouse annual event 29.9.2021!

This year the Synbio Powerhouse annual seminar will explore the symbiosis of synthetic biology and the circular bioeconomy. Microbes are uniquely capable to utilise bio waste as feedstock. With the tools of synthetic biology we are able to engineer the microbes to efficiently convert the waste into useful products such as biomaterials, chemicals and pharmaceuticals.

Biotechnology can help us achieve a truly sustainable use of biomass derived from agriculture, forest or food industry. What could be done, what is needed and how should we move forward? Join us to discuss this hot topic together with industry experts, researchers and policy makers. In our event you will also hear some of the latest finding from novel synbio research.

Business, culture and fun in Summer Celebration with Otaniemi startups, creatives and sustainability professionals on June 11

The first ever virtual Summer Celebration with Otaniemi startups, creatives and sustainability professionals was a refreshing dive into Espoo innovation ecosystem scene.

The event was arranged on June 11 in Zoom and broadcasted from Urban Mill, in the heart of Espoo Innovation Garden at Aalto University campus. It attracted 170 participants to learn and discuss about collaboration in the Otaniemi innovation ecosystem. The recording can be watched on Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RTlAD5KCmaM&t=1s

The celebration began with a musical performance by Retuperän WBK, the legendary Fire Brigade Band of technology students from Aalto University.

This was followed by breakout sessions and discussions by the leaders of the City of Espoo, Aalto University, VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland and Academic Engineers and Architects in Finland TEK. These are the key institutional players shaping the success of Espoo Innovation Garden, already the biggest Innovation hub in the Northern Europe.

In 2018 the City of Espoo was nominated the most intelligent city in the world. Mayor Jukka Mäkelä emphasized that the point is not to be the most intelligent city but to be the most intelligent community.

“That means that we have to do it together with our citizens, but also it is very important for to the city of Espoo to collaborate with Aalto University, research centers like VTT and with the companies. Collaboration is the key word” he continued.

Keynote speakers were Jyri Engeström, Partner & Co-Founder at Yes VC and Patrick Shulist, Assistant Professor of Sustainability in Business in Aalto University.

Watch Jyri Engeströms presentation from here (pdf).

The celebration ended with artistic performances by aerial artist Ilona Jäntti and RWBK student orchestra.

The whole event was streamed on Start North’s Youtube channel for everybody to experience. You can watch the recording of the event from here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=RTlAD5KCmaM

Watch, listen and enjoy the artistic performances recorded in the event:

Virtual networking platform Deal Room was offered 11.-12.6.2020 for all participants to make virtual 1-1 meetings with other participants before and after the celebrations in Zoom.

Kuvassa Lasse kertoo kokouksen aluksi, missä olemme. Osa osallistuneista vtt-läisistä on ollut aiemmin töissäkin samassa talossa.
