Inspiring evening on Fear of Failure in Urban Cave – with IDBM Klubi and IMPROVment

What’s stopping you from making your coolest ideas happen? What can improve teach you about innovation, team work or failure? What happens in our mind when we are afraid of failing – or once we think we failed?

With the lead of Jani Turku from IMPROVment, a bunch of students from the multidisciplinary International Design Business Management program spent an inspiring evening at Urban Mill on January 15 discussing and experiencing the fear of failure by mechanisms of improvisation and creativity It was an evening with a lot of laughing, great discussions and relaxed atmosphere!

Most participants had not been at Urban Mill before and were excited to see the space, too.

The event was organized by IDBM Klubi ry in collaboration with Jani Turku from IMPROVment and Urban Mill. IDBM Klubi ry (www.facebook.com/idbmklubi) is an organization for International Design Business Management (www.idbm.fi) students, alumni and other like-minded people.

Jani Turku is an IDBM alumnus, Certified Applied Improvisation Practitioner and Business Coach. His company IMPROVment (www.improvment.fi) helps organizations to boost productivity, creativity and individuals’ skills by offering an opportunity for experiential learning in an interactive, safe, fun and lively atmosphere.

The space for the event was sponsored jointly by Urban Mill and TEK Uusimaa regional office www.tek.fi/uusimaa, which pilot new community space services in Otaniemi.

Jameissa pääset kokemaan kokonaisen palveluiden suunnitteluprosessin lyhyessä ajassa. Tilaisuus on avoin kaikille palveluista kiinnostuneille.

Jamin aluksi osanottajat jaetaan monialaisiin työryhmiin.  Seuraavan 48 tunnin aikana ryhmät kehittävät jostain ideastaan konkreettisen palveluratkaisun. Ryhmiä mentoroivat kokeneet palvelumuotoilijat.

Small teams in locations all over the world will be working together for 48 intensive hours to build entirely new service solutions.

Service Jam is about developing new services. Diverse teams will move from ideas to hands-on solutions using methods from service design, innovative problem solving, and rapid prototyping – with experienced service designers on hand to help. Service Jam is not lectures or seminars but learning by doing – and having fun!

All you need is an open mind, an interest in developing services, and a willingness to roll-up your sleeves!

Korjauksen ajaksi Otaniemen kampuskirjasto muuttaa toukokuussa 2015 osoitteeseen Otakaari 1 X ja sen nimeksi tulee Oppimiskeskus beta.
Tiedotamme kirjaston kiinnioloajasta tarkemmin lähempänä toukokuuta.
Oppimiskeskus beta avataan yleisölle kesällä 2015.

Aalto University Otaniemi Campus Library (Otaniementie 9) is due to undergo a renovation.
The Otaniemi Campus Library will relocate in May 2015 to Otakaari 1 X for the duration of the renovation and is to be retitled Learning Center beta.
Information on library closures will be made available closer to May.
Learning Center beta will be open to the public in the summer 2015.
Learning Center beta will provide its customers all the familiar library services in addition to new services.
School of Business library services for Bachelor degree students will also be housed at Learning Center beta.

Land use planning course closing in Urban Mill: students featured mixed and flexible usage of spaces and a “24/7 life” in Otaniemi

”The Land Use Strategies and Planning Cooperation course, arranged this year as a part of the SASUI (Systemic Architectures for Sustainable Urban Development) research project, culminated in student presentations on 3rd December in Aalto Built Environment Laboratory (ABE) Space in Urban Mill. The topic of the presented project works was the Otaniemi area in Espoo. Commenting on the work in the audience were also the representatives of Espoo city planning office. The course is organized by YTK Land Use Planning and Urban Studies Group.

During the course, one of the students’ tasks was to prepare normative and explorative scenarios depicting the future of the Otaniemi area. In strategic planning, a normative scenario describes a future with desirable outcomes, and an explorative scenario a future with undesirable outcomes. Both scenarios should present credible trajectories. For example, an explorative scenario depicts a trajectory that is likely to unfold if identified threats are not adequately responded to.

Among other things, the students’ normative scenarios featured the idea of mixed and flexible usage of spaces and a “24/7 life” in Otaniemi. In contrast, in the explorative scenarios, sticking to one purpose per space led into an area without activities in the evenings and nights. The threat of global warming inducing weather uncertainties and rises in the sea level in the coastal Otaniemi was also a part of one explorative scenario. The students utilized the three screen system of ABE Space to show the visualizations of the scenarios.

In a discussion following the presentations, Espoo city representatives asked questions and the students reflected on what they had learned during the course. One student pointed out that from strategic perspective it feels hard and even unfruitful to consider one area in isolation as it is strongly affected by global and local trends. Despite the challenges, the point of view of looking things from a strategic long term perspective was deemed important.

A closing statement by the organizing teacher Raine Mäntysalo was that creating such scenarios together with different stakeholders would be beneficial for any planning process. This would perhaps motivate the stakeholders to work on reaching the normative scenarios together. This in turn, would shift the regulative perspective of city planning into a perspective of common mobilization.

Aligning interests through a dialogue between the stakeholders of an area and co-design in city planning are exactly something Aalto Built Environment Laboratory aims to facilitate and study.

Collaplan Beta Launched

News from Summer of Startups 2014 team Collaplan:

Collaplan (f.k.a. OurNeighborhood) helps architects, construction developers and cities collaborate with building and neighborhood end users.

Collaplan has launched as closed beta. Collaplan helps Valeria Gryada, a service designer responsible for developing student driven learning spaces at Aalto University, to communicate with her end users. These end users are students and university staff who will use a new Learning Hub space that is being developed to the campus. Valeria says that:

“Collaplan helps me to communicate design proposals to a big group of end users in an efficient way. With Collaplan all stakeholders have the chance to see and discuss the same material in real time without having to organise a physical meeting. As all stakeholders see all comments in the same place, the chance for contradictions and misunderstandings decrease.”

The Learning Hub project has been one of the first real-life use cases for Collaplan and the results are promising not only from the designers/project managers point of view. The end users describe Collaplan as “simple, clear and easy-to-use”. We are happy to continue our collaboration with Valeria and enable the efficient creation of user-centered learning spaces at Aalto University.

Long Term Customer Agreement with Setlementtiasunnot Oy

Collaplan will be used as a collaboration platform for Finnish housing developer Setlementtiasunnot Oy’s new project. Setlementtiasunnot Oy plans to develop a intergenerational city block to Joensuu, Finland during the next few years. Starting in January 2015, Collaplan will be used as a centralized communication tool between different project stakeholders throughout the project. Setlementtiasunnot Oy’s CEO Kimmo Rönkä says that:

“Collaplan is a very promising tool for making collaborative construction project development more efficient, more engaging as well as more creative. We believe that Collaplan will make our project better and that is why we have made a commitment to use it throughout the project”.

Australian Design Factory student team working in Finland asks for participation in Purchasing Trends Survey

We are students from Swinburne Design Factory, Melbourne, Australia, partnering with META and ProjectProject to research new retail distribution models, with emphasis on consumer behaviour relevant to brands in textile labels. The impact of digital technologies in retail, such as the use of apps, social media and e-commerce and their impact on business models, brand awareness and sales will be explored.

Peter Senge is a Senior Lecturer in Leadership and Sustainability at the MIT. He is the founding chair of the Society for Organizational Learning (SoL) and the author of the widely acclaimed book, The Fifth Discipline: The Art and Practice of The Learning Organization. The Journal of Business Strategy (September/October 1999) named Senge one of the 24 people who has had the greatest influence on business strategy over the last 100 years.

Kaupunkitutkimuksen päivät 2015: työryhmäkutsu (19.12.2014 mennessä)

Seuraavat Kaupunkitutkimuksen päivät järjestetään Tampereen yliopistossa 11.–12.5.2015. Järjestelyistä vastaa Suomen Kaupunkitutkimuksen Seura

(SKTS) yhteistyössä Alue- ja ympäristötutkimuksen seuran (AYS) ja Yhdyskuntasuunnittelun seuran (YSS) kanssa. Päivillä lähestytään kaupunkeja näyttämö-metaforan kautta. Mitä tapahtuu kaupunkinäyttämöllä, entä kulissien takana? Kuinka kaupungin elämää ja tapahtumia on käsikirjoitettu ja mikä osa jää improvisaatiolle? Minkälaista on kaupungeissa käyty dialogi?

Vuoden 2015 Kaupunkitutkimuksen päivillä tarkastellaan kaupunkeja näyttämöinä monipuolisesti arjen ja juhlan, kaupunkisuunnittelun ja improvisaation, vallan representaation ja osallistavan aktivismin, performanssin, suurten ja pienten tapahtumien, arkkitehtuurin ja rakentamisen, teknologian, kaupunkipolitiikan, median, monikulttuurisuuden, yhteiskunnallisen ja kulttuurisen muutoksen, sekä muista soveltuvista näkökulmista. Kansainvälisiksi kutsuvieraspuhujiksi ovat lupautuneet sosiologi Bella Dicks (Cardiff University) sekä teollisuushistorian ja teknologian tutkija Mats Fridlund (Aalto University). Kolmas kutsuvieraspuhuja varmistuu pian. Päivillä jaetaan Vuoden kaupunkikirjoitus -palkinto ja kuullaan palkittuun kirjoitukseen perustuva luento. Ohjelmaan sisältyy myös kaupunkitilan luovaa haltuun ottamista ja uudelleen määrittelemistä käsittelevä Versus-tempaus: http://ays.fi/versus/.

Päivillä työskennellään monitieteisissä työryhmissä, joihin ovat tervetulleita sekä tutkijat että kuntien päättäjät, virkamiehet, ammattilaiset ja kaupunkiaktiivit. Työryhmät muodostetaan perinteiseen tapaan tiedeyhteisön aloitteiden pohjalta. Erityisesti toivotamme tervetulleiksi ehdotukset, jotka mahdollistavat kaupunkien ja järjestöjen kanssa yhteistyössä tehtävän tutkimuksen esittelemisen. Pyydämme työryhmäesityksiä perjantaihin 19.12.2014 mennessä. Esityksestä (150–300 sanaa) tulee käydä ilmi työryhmän teema, potentiaalinen kohderyhmä ja mielellään mahdolliset puheenjohtajat. Esitykset lähetetään sähköpostin liitetiedostona päivien tieteellisen toimikunnan puheenjohtajalle Tanja Vahtikarille (tanja.vahtikari(at)uta.fi <http://uta.fi>.  Mahdollisia teemoja ovat (mutta ei ulosrajaavasti):

Valta vaihtui Maanmittarikillassa juhlallisin menoin Urban Cavessa

Lauantaina 13.12.2014 vaihdettiin Urban Millillä Maanmittarikillan hallitusta niin kutsutuilla testamenttisitseillä yhteensä vajaa 20-henkisen maanmittaripoppoon voimin. Vaihto toteutettiin akateemisen pöytäjuhlan merkeissä varsin monipuolisella menulla varustettuna, sillä kukin kuluvan vuoden hallituslaisista oli etukäteen valmistanut mieleisensä ruoan tai juoman muulle porukalle tarjoiltavaksi. Samalla seuraavan vuoden hallitukselle luovutettiin virkakohtaiset testamentit edeltäjiensä toimesta erinäisten juhlapuheiden, teekkarilaulujen ja kuohuviinipullojen poksauttelujen yhteydessä.

Sitsipaikkana Urban Millin Cave-tila tarjosi loistavat puitteet sitsaamiseen tunnelmavalaistuksessa ja Youtube-takkatulen loimutessa taustalla valkokankaille heijastettuna. Hallituksenvaihtositsit toivatkin hieman iloista menoa ja melskettä perinteisesti yleensä viikonloppuisin hieman hiljaisemmalle Urban Millille.

Samalla alkaa kuluvan vuoden hallituksen jäsenten toimikausi lähentyä päätöstään ja perinteisesti testamenttisitsien jälkeen suurin osa vastuusta alkaakin pikkuhiljaa siirtyä jo uusille toimijoille. Täten myös oma pestini Maanmittarikillan vuoden 2014 puheenjohtajana on päättymäisillään ja haluaisinkin vielä lopuksi kiittää koko Maanmittarikillan puolesta Urban Millin henkilökuntaa sujuvasta ja joustavasta yhteistyöstä kanssamme, Maanmittarikillan vuoden 2014 hallitusta aivan mahtavasta kuluneesta vuodesta sekä toivottaa kaikille tasapuolisesti hyvää ja rauhallista joulunodotusta!

Digikysely: Yli kaksi kolmasosaa TEKin alumnikerhon jäsenistä haluaa osallistua kehittäjinä tai testikäyttäjinä liiton toiminnan digitalisointiin

Käyttäjät ovat minkä tahansa organisaation vielä suuresti alikäytössä oleva voimavara. Tämä kävi jälleen kerran selvästi ilmi Tekniikan Akateemisten liitto TEK ry:n alumnikerhon esitelmäillassa 11.12. kokeiluna toteutetussa digikyselyssä. Tulokset kertovat, että Akateemisen teekkarikerhon AATE jäsenistä reippaasti yli kaksi kolmasosaa haluaa osallistua kehittäjinä tai testikäyttäjinä oman liittonsa toiminnan ja palvelujen digitalisoinnin käytännön kehittämistyöhön. Yksi neljäsosa on kiinnostunut saamaan tietoa digikokeilujen tuloksista. Vain yksi kahdestakymmenestä ei kokenut asiaa itselleen tärkeänä.

AATE toteutti kyselyn yhteistyössä Urban Millin ja TEKin Uudenmaan aluetoimiston kanssa tablettikyselynä kerhon esitelmäillassa, jossa kaksi tablettia laitettiin kiertoon osallistujille. Kyselyyn oli mahdollista vastata myös verkossa olevan linkin kautta. Valtaosa vastauksista kerättiin tableteilla. Kokeilu onnistui erinomaisesti, noin puolet kerhon jäsenistä vastasi kyselyyn.

Tilaisuuteen osallistui yli 70 TEKin nykyistä ja entistä järjestöaktiivia. Illan teemana oli mitä TEK on vuonna 2020 ja miten se voi silloin olla järjestön 2020-strategian mukainen yhteisöllinen ammattijärjestökentän edelläkävijä, joka hyödyntää digitaalisuuden avaamina uusia mahdollisuuksia.

Illan teeman alusti kerhon jäsen ja TEKin Jäsenpalveluvaliokunnan digityöryhmän vetäjä Kari Mikkelä. Pääesitelmän piti TEKin hallituksen jäsen ja TEKin uuden digihankkeen vetäjä, TIEKE:n kehittämisjohtaja Jyrki Kasvi. Hän kuvasi interaktiivisella ja mukaansatempaavalla tavalla minkälaisessa globaalissa ja digitaalisessa toimintaympäristössä elämme vuonna 2020 ja mitä tämä tarkoittaisi niin työelämän, koulutuksen, julkisten palveluiden kuin organisaatioiden työkulttuurien kehittämisen näkökulmista.

Tilaisuuden päätteeksi syntyi yhteinen näkemys, jonka mukaan Akateeminen teekkarikerho haluaa toimia TEKin digikehityksen kehittäjä- ja testiyhteisönä. Kerhon ylipääsihteeri Lars Miikki kiitti jäseniä aktiivisuudesta ja totesi että TEKin digikehittäminen nostetaan nyt kerhon seuraavien vuosien fokusalueeksi.
