A Hack at Mill 8.-10.11.2013!

The sad fact is that 90% of startups fail.  They e.g. fail because they lack the experience to survive in a tough economy, and they fail because they don’t get the money and help they need. A Hack helped seven teams during the weekend  8.-10.11.2013  to avoid those destinies.

Teams worked alongside experts to build a prototype or develop a product. The winners (not decided yet) get to pitch their idea to 2000 investors at this year’s SLUSH in Helsinki.

The Knowledge Triangle – Re-inventing the Future,

a book from the European Society for Engineering Education SEFI, Aalto University and Universitat Politècnica de València. Edited by Pia Lappalainen, Aalto University and Markku Markkula, Aalto University.

According to the Europe 2020 strategy and the plans of Horizon 2020, one of the key success factors for Europe is to achieve more innovation out of research. The authors of Knowledge Triangle book have met several times in the recent years within international networking through SEFI European Society for Engineering Education (in particular in the context of the thematic network EUGENE) and IACEE International Association for Continuing Engineering Education. In a series of projects, workshops and conferences, all focusing on the triple play of research, education and innovation, they were able to share their common understandings and to develop and create advanced new concepts. This book brings together lessons learnt in an interesting compilation of articles, reflecting our consolidated knowledge together with some brand new insights.

Ilkka Kakko analyzed the ”Big Shift towards post-normal era” in his presenation ”The Fundamentals of Third Generation Science Park Concept” at UNESCO – WTA International Training Workshop, Daejeon, 26.9.2013.

Urban Mill was presented as an emerging Research Cloud case.

Laurea University of Applied Science, European Network of Living Labs (ENoLL) jointly with the World Bank invite professionals your pragmatic experiences (case descriptions) in the ISJ -the Interdisciplinary Studies Journal. The ISJ number will focus on “how-to integrate open innovation and ICT technologies in service design and delivery within a Smart City”. Furthermore, the results of the ISJ Journal have the possibility to be published in a Handbook (developed jointly with the World Bank) for aspiring Smart Cities with a specific focus on policy-makers and other stakeholders wishing to improve public service delivery leveraging existing technologies and open innovation techniques. Consequently it will offer you and your organization the possibility to showcase your product/service/solution to a larger international audience.

Kaupunkitieto-skenaariotyöpaja

Thursday, November 21, 2013 from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM (PST)

Helsinki, Finland

Työpajassa on tarkoitus edistää energian käyttöön, joukkoliikenteeseen ja ilmanlaatuun liittyvän kaupunkitiedon hyödyntämistä kaupungin suunnittelussa ja arjen kaupunkilaisuudessa. Pohdimme lisäksi tietoaineistoihin ja -palveluihin liittyviä mahdollisuuksia ja haasteita.


Toivomme mukaan kaupunkiaktiiveja, sovelluskehittäjiä, avoin data -aktiiveja ja Helsingin kaupungin edustajia. Mukana työpajoissa ovat lisäksi KaToHan-projektin osapuolet: Aalto-yliopisto, Helsingin Energia, HSL, HSY, Siemens ja Santa Margarita.

Skenaariotyöpajojen tavoitteena on löytää ratkaisuja tai ehdotuksia tulevaisuuden toimille kaupunkitietoon ja sen hyödyntämiseen liittyen, mutta samalla myös saada aikaan kaikkia osapuolia hyödyttävää vuorovaikutusta tahojen välillä.

Työskentely tapahtuu sekaryhmissä, ja sen tarkoituksena on pyrkiä luomaan skenaarioita jotka liittyvät kaupunkitiedon käyttöön erilaisissa tilanteissa. Ryhmätyöskentelyn tueksi ja avuksi ryhmät saavat käyttöönsä setin työkaluja, jotka on luotu kaupunkitiedon käsittelyä varten ja kaupunkilaisten jokapäiväiseen elämään pohjautuen.

Työpajan lopputuloksena laajenee käsitys siitä, mitä kaupunkitieto on ja miten sitä voidaan hyödyntää uudenlaisissa hallintamalleissa, ja mitä kaupunkitieto tarkoittaa kaupunkilaisten jokapäiväisen elämän näkökulmasta. Tavoitteena on myös saada konkreettisia ideoita tulevaisuuden kaupunkitiedon tarpeille ja käytölle.

Active Life Village on toiminut nyt uusissa Urban Millin tiloissa kesästä lähtien. Uusi osoitteemme on Betonimiehenkuja 3, 02150 Espoo  (Otaniemi).  Tänä aikana tiloihin on tutustunut jo yli 5000 kävijää. Urban Mill on avoinna kaikille eli tervetuloa tutustumaan hyvinvointiratkaisuihimme ilman ennakkovaroitusta, mikäli liikut täälläpäin. Yleensä meistä aina joku on paikalla.  Olemme mukana myös Omaishoitajamessuilla 28.11 Helsingissä.

Active Life Village has been working at the new Urban Mill premises since last summer.  Our new visiting address is  Betonimiehenkuja 3, 02150 Espoo (Otaniemi).  During the past few months, more than 5000 people have already visited the site.  Urban Mill is open for anyone and you can come and visit without prior warning should you be in the neighborhood.  Usually one of us will be present during daytime.  We are also exhibiting at the ’Omaishoitajamessut’ in Helsinki on November 28th.

I would like to thank all Urban Mill guys and especially Kari Mikkelä for help in arranging visit of our high level delegation from Russia. First of all thank’s for showing around Urban Mill, Startup Sauna and Design Factory – we really saw a lot of interesting and new things for us, and all members of our group were really impressed and liked the inspiring atmosphere that was in the air!

I’m also grateful for arranging meetings with top level authorities of Espoo and other assistance you provided, even if it wasn’t directly related to Urban Mill. It is very nice to have business with so open minded and helpful people and we will start to co-operate really close within next few months, because you really opened our eyes how we can combine our projects with possibilities you have in Otaniemi and get excellent results with creative approach.

Myllystä maailmalle: Consair Oy

Olipa kerran, tarkemmin 2011, ikinuori opiskelijapoika Pekka, joka toisen vuoden kemianopintojensa ohella palasi kesätöihin rakennustyömaille. Kokemusta raksan haalarihommista oli karttunut jo useita vuosia ennen opintojen aloitusta, sillä YO-lakkia oli vaikea saada osaamatta sanaakaan ruotsia.

Pekka valoi pilareita ja kantoi lankkuja kuukauden ajan. Sitten hän näki työkaverinsa rälläköimässä Leca-harkkoseinää ilman minkäänlaisia hengityssuojaimia. Siis näki niinkuin nyt pölypilvessä ylipäätään voi nähdä. Kaivettuaan pölymuhjun pois nenästään hän hoksasi, että kenties opinnot ja tuon niin tutun ja ikävän ongelman voisi yhdistää jollakin keinoin. Työmaamestarin tavattuaan hän kysäisi kiinnostaisiko pääurakoitsijaa, Skanskaa, tietää millaista ilmaa työmaalla hengitetään? Mestari innostui välittömästi ja kutsui pääkonttorilta paikalle työturvallisuusjohtajan. Lyhyiden neuvottelujen jälkeen Pekka ryhtyi kantamaan työmaalle Ilmatieteen laitoksen mittareita.

Kahden kuukauden kuluttua Pekka esitteli tulokset Skanskan johdolle, joka päätti jo esittelyn aikana sijoittaa rahaa pahimman ongelmakohdan eli rakennustyömaiden laastityön hoitoon. Pekka poistui paikalta idea mukanaan; entä jos rakennamme laitteen jolla laastityön kohdepoisto hoidetaan fiksusti?

Tuumasta toimeen

Talvella 2011 idea alkoi jalostua yhdessä Jarnon ja Juhan kanssa ensimmäiseksi prototyypiksi. Kaikki olivat työskennelleet rakennuksilla ja tiesivät, miltä betonimuhju nenässä tuntuu. Ensimmäisen laastisäkin kaataminen huuva v.1.0 edessä oli loistava hetki; tämähän toimii! Ensimmäinen räpellys oli nipinnapin pystyssä pysyvä peltilevykokoelma joka olisi karkoittanut variksetkin pellolta. Se kuitenkin kertoi, ettei ideaa kannattanut vielä haudata.

VTV: TKI-toiminnan ja osaamisen hyödyntäminen kiinteistö- ja rakennusklusterissa

Valtiontalouden tarkastusvirasto järjesti 11.4.2013 työpajan ”TKI-toiminnan ja osaamisen hyödyntäminen kiinteistö- ja rakennusklusterissa”. Työpajasta laadittiin keskustelunaloite, joka sisältää johdattelun työpajan aihepiiriin, työpajan johdattelupuheenvuorojen pitäjien laatimat kirjoitukset sekä niistä laaditun suppean yhteenvedon. Keskustelunaloite julkaistiin 30.8.2013 valtiontalouden tarkastusviraston selvitykset -sarjassa.
