Ryhmien ristiflowta Urban Millissä 3.3.

Mylly täyttyi taas tänään ihmisistä ja kohtaamisista. Tässä muutamia välähdyksiä tämän päivän flowsta.

Aamulla paikalle saapui Aalto University Executive Education Oy:n ”BIM-tietomallintamisen prosessit ja yleiset vaatimukset rakennushankkeissa” -kurssin osallistujat, jotka Urban Milliin tutustumisen jälkeen valtasivat Urban Caven koko päiväksi.

Samanaikaisesti alkoi Valtiovarainministeriön kaksipäiväinen julkisen sektorin ylimmän johdon Suomi-Eesti -valmennusohjelma Innovation Boot Camp Urban Scenellä. Tapahtumassa puhumassa mm. valtiosihteeri Olli-Pekka Heinonen (vasemmanpuolinen kuva). Campia fasilitoimassa Innotiimi Oy.

Tämän jälkeen paikalle saapui parinkymmenen innovaatiotoimijan vierailijatyhmä Tanskan Bornholmista Aallon MIND-tutkimusryhmän yli-innovaatioarkkitehti Anssi Tuulenmäen vieraana. Tanskalaiset tutustuivat Urban Millin toimintamalliin ja paikalla olleisiin toimijoihin. Urban Caven videoseinän edessä Aalto-yliopiston Rakennustekniikan laitoksen apulaisprofessori Vishal Singh.

Tanskalaisten jälkeen vuorossa oli tsekkien kahdeksanhenkinen ryhmä neljän eri yliopiston teknologiasiirrontoimistoista Jyväskylän Business Arena Oy:n järjestämällä vierailukäynnillä. University of South Bohemia  – sosiaali- ja terveysala, maatalous, kalatalous, kauppatieteet, kasvatustieteet; Masaryk university  – mm. lääketiede, lakitiede, kasvatustieteet, liikunta, kauppatieteet, tietotekniikka; Mendel University in Brno – maatalous; VSB-Technical University of Ostrava – kone- ja metalliala. Oikeanpuoleisessa kuvassa Urban Millin kumppaniksi tulleen Business Arenan Toni Pienonen on juuri saanut Millin avaimen.

Useat Urban Millin pk-yrittäjät työskenetelivät koko iltapäiväin yhdessä ja erilleen Kitchenissä, kun Scenen tilat olivat kokonaisuudessaan VM:n Innovation Campin käytössä ja muissakin tiloissa oli tunkua. Aamupäivän Digilen co-creative intellligence suunnittelupalaverin jatkoilla mm. Janne Saarikko Urban Millin perusjengin kanssa. Espoon kaupungin kansainvälisten asioiden päällikkö Glenn Gassen (kuva oikealla) oli myös keittiössä työstämässä Espoo Innovation Garden -asioita ja tapaamassa Urban Millin kansainvälisiä vieraita.

Inspiring evening on Fear of Failure in Urban Cave – with IDBM Klubi and IMPROVment

What’s stopping you from making your coolest ideas happen? What can improve teach you about innovation, team work or failure? What happens in our mind when we are afraid of failing – or once we think we failed?

With the lead of Jani Turku from IMPROVment, a bunch of students from the multidisciplinary International Design Business Management program spent an inspiring evening at Urban Mill on January 15 discussing and experiencing the fear of failure by mechanisms of improvisation and creativity It was an evening with a lot of laughing, great discussions and relaxed atmosphere!

Most participants had not been at Urban Mill before and were excited to see the space, too.

The event was organized by IDBM Klubi ry in collaboration with Jani Turku from IMPROVment and Urban Mill. IDBM Klubi ry (www.facebook.com/idbmklubi) is an organization for International Design Business Management (www.idbm.fi) students, alumni and other like-minded people.

Jani Turku is an IDBM alumnus, Certified Applied Improvisation Practitioner and Business Coach. His company IMPROVment (www.improvment.fi) helps organizations to boost productivity, creativity and individuals’ skills by offering an opportunity for experiential learning in an interactive, safe, fun and lively atmosphere.

The space for the event was sponsored jointly by Urban Mill and TEK Uusimaa regional office www.tek.fi/uusimaa, which pilot new community space services in Otaniemi.

”The Land Use Strategies and Planning Cooperation course, arranged this year as a part of the SASUI (Systemic Architectures for Sustainable Urban Development) research project, culminated in student presentations on 3rd December in Aalto Built Environment Laboratory (ABE) Space in Urban Mill. The topic of the presented project works was the Otaniemi area in Espoo. Commenting on the work in the audience were also the representatives of Espoo city planning office. The course is organized by YTK Land Use Planning and Urban Studies Group.

During the course, one of the students’ tasks was to prepare normative and explorative scenarios depicting the future of the Otaniemi area. In strategic planning, a normative scenario describes a future with desirable outcomes, and an explorative scenario a future with undesirable outcomes. Both scenarios should present credible trajectories. For example, an explorative scenario depicts a trajectory that is likely to unfold if identified threats are not adequately responded to.

Among other things, the students’ normative scenarios featured the idea of mixed and flexible usage of spaces and a “24/7 life” in Otaniemi. In contrast, in the explorative scenarios, sticking to one purpose per space led into an area without activities in the evenings and nights. The threat of global warming inducing weather uncertainties and rises in the sea level in the coastal Otaniemi was also a part of one explorative scenario. The students utilized the three screen system of ABE Space to show the visualizations of the scenarios.

In a discussion following the presentations, Espoo city representatives asked questions and the students reflected on what they had learned during the course. One student pointed out that from strategic perspective it feels hard and even unfruitful to consider one area in isolation as it is strongly affected by global and local trends. Despite the challenges, the point of view of looking things from a strategic long term perspective was deemed important.

A closing statement by the organizing teacher Raine Mäntysalo was that creating such scenarios together with different stakeholders would be beneficial for any planning process. This would perhaps motivate the stakeholders to work on reaching the normative scenarios together. This in turn, would shift the regulative perspective of city planning into a perspective of common mobilization.

Aligning interests through a dialogue between the stakeholders of an area and co-design in city planning are exactly something Aalto Built Environment Laboratory aims to facilitate and study.

Australian Design Factory student team working in Finland asks for participation in Purchasing Trends Survey

We are students from Swinburne Design Factory, Melbourne, Australia, partnering with META and ProjectProject to research new retail distribution models, with emphasis on consumer behaviour relevant to brands in textile labels. The impact of digital technologies in retail, such as the use of apps, social media and e-commerce and their impact on business models, brand awareness and sales will be explored.

”After weeks of planning and with anticipation and excitement the Pace University PDP team finally arrived in Espoo to formally begin our PDP projects. There are 6 of us split into 2 teams: One sponsored by ABB to innovate maritime engineering and the other sponsored through ComNet to develop a low-cost autonomous networking system through environmental data collection. Our first stop after our 8-hour flight from New York City was the Espoo Innovation Garden, where we were first introduced to the Design Factory grounds. However, we were lucky enough to run into Lars Miikki, who gave us an in-depth introduction to the history of Urban Mill, an urban innovation platform, from its untraditional conception a to its future ambitions as the next pioneer for European innovation. The space boasts extremely advantageous features, from their geographical and cultural location in Espoo to their emphasis on sustainable development via intelligent solutions like smart city design and internationalization.

This ambition is reflected throughout the grounds of Urban Mill. The space embraces the concept of  “ready but never finished”, with startup vision boards, rough prototypes, research posters, and Styrofoam ground plans scattered throughout the spaces. There are small, creatively decorated design spaces throughout the area, giving it a modern, colorful flare. As Lars explained to us, students prefer the “unfinished” space because it invites their own ideas and contributions as well as providing them with a chance to create, build, and innovate in a way that is original and personalized.

High school students at Urban Mill: ”How to improve our schools”

We.learn.it program brought 50 high school students from Helsinki region to Urban Mill on 30th September 2014 to a gala where high school student teams gave their final presentations in the topic: ”How to improve our schools”. Each team presented their three best ideas on how they can improve their school and how to implement it. The event was coached by Natalie Gaudet from Startup Sauna and Andrew Clutterbuck from Aalto Design Factory.

We.learn.it is an European Union Educational program coordinated by Aalto University looking at sharing university methodologies and practices with high schools. Three High Schools from Helsinki region has come to Aalto University to learn product development communication skills.

Innovaatiot ovat harvoin sattuman tulosta. Systemaattisuus tuotekehityksessä ja
innovoinnissa kantaa nopeasti hedelmää. Innovaatiotoiminnan organisointi vaatii laajempaa ymmärrystä innovaatioprosesseista ja organisaatioiden toiminnasta.

Kansainvälisille markkinoille pyrittäessä monikansallisella yhteistyöllä ja
tiimeillä on keskeinen merkitys. Innovaatioiden syntyminen vaatii otollisten olosuhteiden
luomista ryhmien toiminnalle. Innovaatiot ovat useimmiten tulosta työryhmien ja tiimien
työstä. Oikein organisoituna yritys pystyy systematisoimaan ja ohjaamaan
innovaatiotoimintaansa tehokkaasti kohdentaen resurssit oikeille alueille. Näin kyetään
parhaiten hyödyntämään organisaation jäsenten luovuus.

Kurssin moderaattorit, Jarmo Hallikas ja Risto Nevalainen, ovat
molemmat hankkineet merkittävän kokemuksen ja osaamisen innovaatiotoiminnasta sekä yritystoiminnan että julkisten innovaatiotoimintaa tukevien organisaatioiden kautta.

Sertifiointi
Kurssin hyväksyttävästi suorittaneet saavat sertifikaatin, jonka myöntää European
Certification and Qualification Assosiation (ECQA). ECQA on yhteiseurooppalainen
sertifiointijärjestelmä, joka takaa koulutuksen laadun mm.
• yhtenäisellä koulutuskokonaisuuksien suunnittelulla
• yhteisellä oppimisalustalla, joka sisältää oppimateriaalien lisäksi mm.
osaamistason testaukset
• ECQA:lla on lisäksi yhtenäinen loppukoejärjestelmä EU-CERT sertifikaattien
laadun varmistamiseksi.

Kenelle
Koulutus on tarkoitettu innovaatiotoiminnasta ja tuotekehityksestä sekä liikeideoiden
kehityksestä vastaaville johtajille ja päälliköille. Kurssin sisältö sivuaa myös
innovaatiotoiminnan laatuun liittyviä kysymyksiä. Osallistujille muodostuu selkeä näkemys innovaatiotoiminnan organisoinnista ja ryhmän merkityksestä innovointityössä. Samalla tutustutaan innovaatiomenetelmiin ja keskeisimpiin innovaatioiden syntyy vaikuttaviin tekijöihin. Suomessa on n. 50 sertifioitua Innovation Manageria. Koko Euroopan alueella sertifioituja Innovation Managereja on noin tuhat.

Koulutuspäivät
Koulutus toteutetaan pääsin etäopetuksena. Kurssiin liittyy kolme lähiopetuspäivää.
Koko kurssimateriaali on sekä englannin että saksan kielistä osanottajan valinnan mukaan.
Kurssiin liittyvä koe ja trilliharjoitukset ovat englanninkielisiä.

Kurssi nojaa voimakkaasti e-oppimisalustaan, jossa ovat kurssimateriaalit ja jossa
suoritetaan loppukoe. Etäopetusjaksot sovitaan erikseen ja ne pidetään työpäivän jälkeen n. kahden tunnin sessioina. Etäopetusjaksoilla käydään läpi harjoitustöiden palautteita. Harjoitustöiden tekeminen tapahtuu jaksojen väillä.

Koulutuksen sisältö
Innovation Manager -koulutus keskittyy oppivan organisaation rakentamisen
elementteihin ja sellaisen ympäristön luomiseen, jolla edesautetaan innovaatioiden syntyä ja luodaan pohja innovaatioiden kaupallistamiseksi. Kulutuksen aikana tehdään
harjoitustyö, jossa rakennetaan toimintamalli organisaation innovaatiotoiminnalle.

During the spring term 2014, the
Department of Architecture, with the
generous support from Asko Foundation,
organized a Master Class with professor,
architect, Peter Rich.
The Master Class took students to Kigali,
Rwanda, to design a public building for an
existing need, using participatory planning
processes. Class was working at Urban Mill.
The outcomes of the Master Class
are presented in the Department of
Architecture, Miestentie 3, Espoo,
Sept. 5–26.2014, Mon-Thu 8–20, Fri 8–18.

Kigali näyttely

Aalto-yliopiston Arkkitehtuurin laitos
järjesti keväällä 2014 maisteritason syventävän
mestarikurssin arkkitehti, professori Peter
Richin johdolla. Kurssi toteutettiin Askon
säätiön lahjoituksen turvin.

Kurssin puitteissa matkustettiin Kigaliin,
Rwandaan, tutkimaan arkkitehtuurin mahdollisuuksia
yhteisöjen kehittämisessä, jasuunnittelemaan
julkisia rakennuksia ja tiloja yhdessä paikallisten
yhteisöjen kanssa. Kurssi työskenteli Urban Millissä.

Kurssin tulokset ovat esillä Arkkitehtuurin
