Lauttasaari High School students started their own mini-PDP (Product Development Project) course at Urban Mill. Andy from Design Factory and Natalie from Startup Sauna will run twice a month workshops at Urban Scene. The co-learning and co-design concept is the same as at the Design Factory for the university students. Two companies gave design challenges to students and we’ll see the results of their work at the PDP Gaala next spring.

The gap between secondary schools and universities have been enlarging, especially today when the statistic shows that 65 % of students entering post-secondary school today have no idea what their future careers will entail, partly because many industries have been disrupted and new jobs will be created.
Design Factory and Startup Sauna, Urban Mill’s older brothers and neighbors have joined forces to try to bridge the gap for high school students. Together, they are working with Lauttasaaren Yhteiskoulu and have formulated a curriculum that ties together entrepreneurship and Product Development to give the students an opportunity to be creative, think outside the box and work on real industries projects.
Urban Mill hosted a session for these students on October 9th, and will host many more in the future.
“The space at Urban Mill is wonderful, it is rough, not new, and allows the creative juices to flow” says Andy Clutterbuck, Design Factory’s Coach and co-founder of this high school program. “We know that innovation is not learned in a typical school classroom with row of desks, so open places like Urban Mill, Startup Sauna and Design Factory are crucial for these types of workshops.”
The other co-founder of the program is Natalie Gaudet from Startup Sauna. Together, they bring a great dynamic and different perspective to teach the high school students.
Throughout the academic year, these students will be working in teams and will be solving a problem that real companies have. The final projects will be showcased at Design Factory in April in a Gala.

A-laitoksen Yhdyskunta- ja kaupunkisuunnitelun kurssin kritiikkitilaisuus avasi toiminnan Urban Balconylla. Puolen sataa opiskelijaa opettajineen arvioi iltaan asti oppilaiden kaupunkimalleja. Eloisan dialogin lomassa nautittiin Urban Kitchenin antimista.
Yhteensä lähes sata kaupunkimallia – tämän kritiikin työt ja joukko edellisten vuosien töitä – ovat esillä parvella jatkossakin. A-laitos tekee niille telineet ikkunan alle syksyn aikana.
Aalto IDBM Cource spinoff company Kolme Innovation Lab Oy opened their co-working corner at Urban Mill in October 2013. Their team of young international professionals has already worked actively on the European innovation arena. The team offers now innovation services for the whole Urban Mill network.

Kolme Innovation Lab translated the concept of employee-driven innovation towards Employee- Driven Innovation Labs. These labs unleash the innovative behaviour of employees by combining three elements: an innovative space, tools and methods and community building.

Lars Miikki Urban Millistä esitteli myllyn toimintaa pääministeri Jyrki Kataiselle eduskunnassa 1.10. järjestetyssä Kokoomuksen palkansaajavaltuuskunnan tapaamisessa. Valtuuskunnan puheenjohtaja, kansanedustaja Sari Sarkomaan isännöimä tilaisuus veti sankan joukon ammattijärjestökentän vaikuttajia pohtimaan yhdessä Suomen tulevaisuuden menestyksen eväitä.
Pääministeri Katainen korosti jatkuvan itseuudistumisen tärkeyttä sekä uusien innovatiivisten toimintamallien tarvetta yhteiskunnan kasvaviin haasteisiin vastaamisessa ja palvelujen kehittämisessä. Urban Milliä pääministeri piti toivoa antavana esimerkkinä.
”Need for speed – Leadership in the digital economy” was the main theme discussed during the DIGILE Business Forum on 30.09.2013 at Dipoli. Urban Mill is bridging thoughts and activities between two SHOKS, DIGILE and RYM, and took of course part to this interesting Forum.
There are no speed limits on the road to digital economy leadership. During the last few years it has become very clear that the digital economy (also called the Internet economy or the second economy) is the fastest growing sector of all developed economies, and also of several developing economies. Already in the leading countries the digital economy forms roughly 10 per cent of GDP. We are in the middle of a new industrial revolution that will radically shape all industries, and all domains of business – also leadership and management. Speed of new business development will be one of the key ingredients of the new leadership skill set.
DIGILE Business Forum 2013 focused on the challenges of business leadership in the digital economy. Through discussions initiated by expert presentations, you partipants got inspiration and information to better cope with the digital era of leadership. The event was targeted at all companies and business leaders in all industries.
This year a special focus was on the US. The US is one of the innovation leaders in the field of ICT, business and digital services. Finland-US cooperation in new digital business creation could create concrete success factors for both parties, not only in the US market but also in the third markets together with American partners.

The workshop is the Kick-Off and the pilot workshop on integrating Creative Sustainability studies in the development process of the T3 area (Otaniemi-Tapiola- Keilaniemi) in the global context (collaboration with Espoo and Shanghai cities).
The workshop is organized with local stakeholders and partners from Tongji University/Shanghai.
CASE: The main task of this workshop is to plan and design a desirable courtyard for Aalto University Design Factory, Urban Mill and Start-Up Sauna that will inspire the development of the creative community on Otaniemi Campus. The outdoor space should have following features: sustainability, creative, accessibility, reasonable function, interaction with the above mentioned buildings, surroundings (T3 area, Otaniemi, Keilaniemi, Tapiola) and stakeholders, user friendly and inclusive consideration, etc.
Course keeps its home base in the Urban Cave.
The course is a team-based workshop that will start with context study, lectures and brainstorming, will be followed by a working studio, to develop several scenarios of how the space can be used by the people of Aalto University and its collaborators. The students will finally finish the project with a power point presentation and a poster (and a physical model). Lecturing, brain storming, group share, critique and desk review will be the main teaching tools.
