Urban Mill – luova keskiö kaupunki-innovaatiolle (Pecha Kucha)
Urban Mill has applied now nearly one year its own tailored Lean Startup approach. Here are some thoughts from Steve Blank and his associates, which ideas have guided us through our business model generation period:

”For the last decade we’ve been teaching students how to write business plans. Yet time and again we watched as few business plans survived first contact with customers. It took us awhile until we recognized that we’ve insisted on business plans because we assumed startups were just smaller versions of large companies. What we’ve now know is that they’re not.
After decades of watching thousands of startups follow this standard regimen, we’ve now learned at least three things:
1. Business plans rarely survive first contact with customers. As the boxer Mike Tyson once said about his opponents’ prefight strategies: “Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the mouth.”2. No one besides venture capitalists and the late Soviet Union requires five-year plans to forecast a series of unknowns. These plans are generally fiction, and dreaming them up is almost always a waste of time.
3. Startups are not smaller versions of large companies. They do not unfold in accordance with master plans. The ones that ultimately succeed go quickly from failure to failure, all the while adapting, iterating on, and improving their initial ideas as they continually learn from customers.

– Tunnistatko myös läsnäolon ja sosiaalisen yhteisön voiman ja merkityksen työssäsi – olitpa läsnä fyysisesti tai virtuaalisilla alustoilla? Oletko tai haluaisitko olla työntekijä, jonka työtavat ovat uudet – new ways of work? Kuuluuko tälläisiä henkilöitä tiimiisi ja organisaatioosi – miten johdan itseäni, miten johdan muita? Ovatko uuden työn tekemisen tavat sinulle tavoiteltava asia?

Iltapäivän tavoitteena on tarkastella uusien työn tekemisen tapoja erityisesti työympäristöjen näkökulmasta.
Rakennuslehti kirjoittaaa: ”Järvenpään uuden terveystalon suunnittelua koskeva hankintasopimus on allekirjoitettu 30. lokakuuta. Terveystalo valmistuu suunnitelmien mukaan vuoden 2016 lopussa.”
”Suunnittelussa merkittävää osaa näyttelee virtuaalisuunnittelu. Virtuaalisuudessa eri suunnittelualojen ratkaisut visualisoidaan käyttäjille tietomallein ja haetaan vuorovaikutteisuutta osallistamalla heidät palautteen saamiseksi. Suunnittelun työkaluna käytetään kayttäjälähtöistä Valo-virtuaalisuunnittelumenetelmää, jota UKI Arkkitehdit on kehittänyt jo seitsemän vuotta.”

”Menetelmän avulla tilat voidaan rakentaa virtuaalisesti luonnollisessa koossaan ennen kuin niitä aletaan rakentaa oikeasti. Näin eri käyttäjäryhmät voivat tutustua tiloihin kävelemällä tai vaikka koetyöskentelemällä niissä suunnittelijoiden johdolla. Ennen kuin yhtään kiveä on muurattu paikoilleen oikeaan rakennukseen, voimme myös nähdä tulevat tarpeet tai suunnittelun puutteet”, UKI Arkkitehtien toimitusjohtaja Mikko Heikkinen sanoo.”

”Last weekend A Hack 2013 Helsinki took part at Urban Mill. Seven teams from Estonia and Finland were working with a number of mentors from various countries for three days to develop and get feedback on their ideas, extend their business knowledge and get advice and improve their pitch. The winner of the final pitching gets to introduce their idea at Shlush. We really enjoyed the open atmosphere and facilities that Urban Mill provided us with. It was the prefect location for our event and we are very grateful for the hospitality!”

”There will be a crucible for new institutions and networks.. They will be neutral spaces where networks of investors, entrepreneurs, hackers and customers converge for collaborative knowledge creation and trust building, cementing relationships initiated and cultivated online.”
Ilkka Kakko analyzed the ”Big Shift towards post-normal era” in his presenation ”The Fundamentals of Third Generation Science Park Concept” at UNESCO – WTA International Training Workshop, Daejeon, 26.9.2013.
Urban Mill was presented as an emerging Research Cloud case.

Laurea University of Applied Science, European Network of Living Labs (ENoLL) jointly with the World Bank invite professionals your pragmatic experiences (case descriptions) in the ISJ -the Interdisciplinary Studies Journal. The ISJ number will focus on “how-to integrate open innovation and ICT technologies in service design and delivery within a Smart City”. Furthermore, the results of the ISJ Journal have the possibility to be published in a Handbook (developed jointly with the World Bank) for aspiring Smart Cities with a specific focus on policy-makers and other stakeholders wishing to improve public service delivery leveraging existing technologies and open innovation techniques. Consequently it will offer you and your organization the possibility to showcase your product/service/solution to a larger international audience.

Tervetuloa mukaan Tekes-rahoitteisen KaToHan-tutkimusprojektin (Kaupunkitieto ja toiminnan hallinta) skenaariotyöpajaan.
Työpajassa on tarkoitus edistää energian käyttöön, joukkoliikenteeseen ja ilmanlaatuun liittyvän kaupunkitiedon hyödyntämistä kaupungin suunnittelussa ja arjen kaupunkilaisuudessa. Pohdimme lisäksi tietoaineistoihin ja -palveluihin liittyviä mahdollisuuksia ja haasteita.
Toivomme mukaan kaupunkiaktiiveja, sovelluskehittäjiä, avoin data -aktiiveja ja Helsingin kaupungin edustajia. Mukana työpajoissa ovat lisäksi KaToHan-projektin osapuolet: Aalto-yliopisto, Helsingin Energia, HSL, HSY, Siemens ja Santa Margarita.
Skenaariotyöpajojen tavoitteena on löytää ratkaisuja tai ehdotuksia tulevaisuuden toimille kaupunkitietoon ja sen hyödyntämiseen liittyen, mutta samalla myös saada aikaan kaikkia osapuolia hyödyttävää vuorovaikutusta tahojen välillä.
Työskentely tapahtuu sekaryhmissä, ja sen tarkoituksena on pyrkiä luomaan skenaarioita jotka liittyvät kaupunkitiedon käyttöön erilaisissa tilanteissa. Ryhmätyöskentelyn tueksi ja avuksi ryhmät saavat käyttöönsä setin työkaluja, jotka on luotu kaupunkitiedon käsittelyä varten ja kaupunkilaisten jokapäiväiseen elämään pohjautuen.
Työpajan lopputuloksena laajenee käsitys siitä, mitä kaupunkitieto on ja miten sitä voidaan hyödyntää uudenlaisissa hallintamalleissa, ja mitä kaupunkitieto tarkoittaa kaupunkilaisten jokapäiväisen elämän näkökulmasta. Tavoitteena on myös saada konkreettisia ideoita tulevaisuuden kaupunkitiedon tarpeille ja käytölle.
Active Life Village on toiminut nyt uusissa Urban Millin tiloissa kesästä lähtien. Uusi osoitteemme on Betonimiehenkuja 3, 02150 Espoo (Otaniemi). Tänä aikana tiloihin on tutustunut jo yli 5000 kävijää. Urban Mill on avoinna kaikille eli tervetuloa tutustumaan hyvinvointiratkaisuihimme ilman ennakkovaroitusta, mikäli liikut täälläpäin. Yleensä meistä aina joku on paikalla. Olemme mukana myös Omaishoitajamessuilla 28.11 Helsingissä.

Active Life Village has been working at the new Urban Mill premises since last summer. Our new visiting address is Betonimiehenkuja 3, 02150 Espoo (Otaniemi). During the past few months, more than 5000 people have already visited the site. Urban Mill is open for anyone and you can come and visit without prior warning should you be in the neighborhood. Usually one of us will be present during daytime. We are also exhibiting at the ’Omaishoitajamessut’ in Helsinki on November 28th.

First of all thank’s for showing around Urban Mill, Startup Sauna and Design Factory – we really saw a lot of interesting and new things for us, and all members of our group were really impressed and liked the inspiring atmosphere that was in the air!
I’m also grateful for arranging meetings with top level authorities of Espoo and other assistance you provided, even if it wasn’t directly related to Urban Mill. It is very nice to have business with so open minded and helpful people and we will start to co-operate really close within next few months, because you really opened our eyes how we can combine our projects with possibilities you have in Otaniemi and get excellent results with creative approach.
