Towards a Learning Center with an open ear for partners

In spring 2013 several service units of the Aalto university contacted the library and expressed an interest in co-operation with regards to the planned Learning Center. The opportunities presented had to be seized and with designer Valeria Gryada we began interviewing the service units. The aim was to explore potential partners to accompany us to offer services in the Learning Center premises.

The requirements and wishes of the service units seemed quite similar to each other. To a great extent they also appeared similar to the wishes expressed in workshops held with students and researchers, e.g. including variety in working spaces from group working areas to quiet study spaces, gathering places and coffee shop services.

From potential partner’s point of view the perspective for the service center is however slightly different. The service units see the Learning Center becoming a vantage point and a venue for events where Aalto University’s research and activities become presented alongside different events. At the same time the center would function as a meeting point and an interaction unit, where visitors from near and far are received. All interviewees saw that the Learning Center is extremely welcome as a shared and neutral space for everyone. New kinds of spaces are being designed for the Learning Center that could fulfill these wishes.

The set of interviews have not only shown a positive attitude of other Aalto University service units towards the Learning Center, but also provided a great deal of practical information for the planning process from estimated space requirements to equipment recommendations. All service units and teams offer excellent expertise in their respective fields, and the future Learning Center can become a great example of effective collaboration between various Aalto University service units on the operational level.

Kettil Cedercreutz: Theory and practice as university strategy, Mon 9.12. 10 am

Tervetuloa kuulemaan vierailuesitelmää professori Kettil Cedercreutz: Teoria ja käytäntö yliopiston strategiana, Theory and practice as university strategy

ma 9.12. klo 10, Finlandia-kokoustila, Lämpömiehenkuja 2, Otaniemi

Professori Kettil Cedercreutz Cincinnattin yliopistosta vierailee Aallossa 9.-10.12.2013. Professori Cedercreutz johtaa Cincinattin yliopistossa ’Professional Practice and Experiential Learning’ -yksikköä ja pitää 9.12. klo  10.00 vierailuesitelmän teorian ja käytännön kohtaamisesta erityisesti Cincinnattin yliopiston strategiassa. Paikka on Lämpömiehenkuja 2, Finlandia-kokoustila,   esitelmän tiivistelmä alla.

Tilaisuus professori Cedercreutzin alustuksella ja jatkuu keskustelun muodossa. Tilaisuuden isäntänä toimii vararehtori Ilkka Niemelä. Tilaisuuden kieli on suomi/englanti.  Tilaisuuden kesto on noin 1.5 tuntia, jonka jälkeen osallistujilla on mahdollisuus osallistua omakustanteiseen lounaaseen Calori-ravintolassa, Lämpömiehenkuja 2:ssa yhdessä professori Cedercreutzin kanssa.

Urban Mill Pecha Kucha at RYM Summit 2013

RYM SUMMIT 3.12.2013 – tutkimuksella menestystä! Miten rakennetun ympäristön huippututkimuksella tehdään parempaa bisnestä – niin kotimarkkinoilla kuin globaalisti? Tilaisuudessa esiteltiin RYM-tutkimusohjelmien tuloksia ja tehtiin linjauksia siitä, mihin huippuosaamisen keihäänkärkiin panostetaan jatkossa. Mukana  myös Urban Mill.

”Rakennetun ympäristön huippuosaamiseen on nyt panostettu noin neljä vuotta ja tuloksellisuus nousee kiihtyvää vauhtia. Halusimme näyttää RYM Oy:n panostusta alamme osaamiseen ja huippuosaamiseen ja saitte nopean ikkunan monipuoliseen tutkimusosaamiseen ja yritysten keihäänkärkihankkeisiin osana ohjelmia. Kiitos kärkiyritysten olemme hyvässä vauhdissa synnyttämässä huippuosaamisen ekosysteemejä tälle toimialalle.

Rakennetun ympäristön toimiala pelastaa maailman. Tämän alan merkitys kasvaa entisestään tulevaisuudessa. Siitä saimme Summitissa hyvää näkemystä Team Finland Ennakointi-ryhmän avulla.

RYM Oy uudistaa omaa tutkimusagendaansa (Strategic Research Agenda=SRA) ja painopisteinä olemme nostamassa kolme teemaa: hyvinvointia lisäävät tilat, resurssiviisaudella kilpailukykyä ja investointeja houkutteleva rakennettu ympäristö. Summitin paneelikeskustelu toi esiin hyvin näiden teemojen mahdollisuudet toimia kärkiyritysten strategioiden toteuttamisessa. Kaikkiin teemoihin haluammekin yrityksiä, jotka haluavat juuri oman strategiansa ja visionsa täyttämiseksi käyttää RYM Oy:n mahdollistamaa SHOK-instrumenttiä. Tervetuloa ottamaan oman strategianne mukaisesti tämä mahdollistava SHOK-toiminta käyttöön.”

Collective sense making and knowledge creation is the new rationality of progress

Esko Kilpi writes in his blog wisely about ”Resilience, rationality and how we make decisions”.

He recognizes three emerging themes how new patterns of communication transform work, organization and management.

The same rationality lies behind the logic how Urban Mill’s pioneer community is working and learning – and thus co-creating new physical, virtual and social artefacts.

Communication coordinates and creates knowledge

”Communication is in fact a process of continuous coordination and knowledge creation. Knowledge is not shared as contents, but arises in action. Knowledge is never transmitted from one mind to another. People participate in a complex process of coordination. It is a change from the movement of messages to a joint movement of thought. The future and viability of an organization depend on this process.”

Choices people make are directly influenced by other people

”The assumption that people make choices in isolation, that they do not adopt opinions simply because other people have them, is no longer sustainable. The choices people make, their buying decisions and their political views, are directly influenced by other people. That is to say that we construct our world together in communication. Network scientists such as Duncan Watts and Mark Granowetter have proved that the world comes to be what it is for us in our relationships. In the end it all depends on the company you keep and the conversations you have.”

Communication creates patterns

”Words become what they are through the responsive actions of the people taking part. The relational view means in practice that if a conversation goes badly, it is always a joint achievement. On the other side, a conversation can only be successful if both participants join in and make it so as Ken Gergen points out. In management, it means that there is nothing one person alone can do to be a good manager. Good ideas don’t count as good ideas, if other people don’t treat them as such.”

Steve Blank’s Lean LaunchPad guides Urban Mill development

”For the last decade we’ve been teaching students how to write business plans. Yet time and again we watched as few business plans survived first contact with customers. It took us awhile until we recognized that we’ve insisted on business plans because we assumed startups were just smaller versions of large companies. What we’ve now know is that they’re not.

After decades of watching thousands of startups follow this standard regimen, we’ve now learned at least three things:
1.       Business plans rarely survive first contact with customers. As the boxer Mike Tyson once said about his opponents’ prefight strategies: “Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the mouth.”

2.       No one besides venture capitalists and the late Soviet Union requires five-year plans to forecast a series of unknowns. These plans are generally fiction, and dreaming them up is almost always a waste of time.

3.       Startups are not smaller versions of large companies. They do not unfold in accordance with master plans. The ones that ultimately succeed go quickly from failure to failure, all the while adapting, iterating on, and improving their initial ideas as they continually learn from customers.

–          Tunnistatko myös läsnäolon ja sosiaalisen yhteisön voiman ja merkityksen työssäsi – olitpa läsnä fyysisesti tai virtuaalisilla alustoilla? Oletko tai haluaisitko olla työntekijä, jonka työtavat ovat uudet – new ways of work? Kuuluuko tälläisiä henkilöitä tiimiisi ja organisaatioosi – miten johdan itseäni, miten johdan muita? Ovatko uuden työn tekemisen tavat sinulle tavoiteltava asia?
