Digile Rolling up the Sleeves 23.4.2014

LIVE 23.4.2014 08:30 – 15:30

“Everything that can be digitized will be digitized”, said Paul Krugman already in 2008. Digital service economy and digital society is surrounding us. It’s time to roll our sleeves, and take our part of this growth market to Finland.

One of the means to speed up this development is FORGE Service Lab, which is a place for designing, developing, implementing and experimenting digital services. FORGE’s aim is to create new digital services in Finland, for domestic and international markets. FORGE Service Lab is open to everybody who is interested in developing digital services, businesses, educational institutions, business development teams, the public sector – all industries and government sectors are included. It’s a joint effort with DIGILE, CSC and Kainuun Etu, and the Ministry of Transport and Communications is taking part in the ramp-up funding of it.

Another way to accelerate the digitalisation of the society is the national data exchange layer, to which Finland is committed to. Implemented in close co-operation with Estonia, the layer is based on the concept and principles of the X-road solution. The X-Road data exchange layer is a technical and organisational environment that allows organising secure web-based data exchange between the information systems of the state.

Now it’s time join new kinds of ecosystems, as they enable new service architectures where public and private sector are working together i.e. companies, cities, start-ups, and municipalities can build up services which go over silos that are created by the limitations of analogical world and which provide true benefit for citizens.

Come to join the discussion and the making of digital service society. We need to speed up in order to guarantee that Finland will be in the forefront in the utilization of digital growth. The day is also for celebrating the opening of FORGE Service Lab.

The keynote of the day is given by Krista Kiuru, Minister of Communications (confirmed April 8), and other guest-speakers come from Suunto, Zalando (GER), JAMK, CSC-IT Center for Science, CGI, Codento, Cybernetica (EST), Kuntien Tiera, Umbrella, Haltu, Säästöpankkikeskus, Kainuun Etu and Ministry of Finance!

The link to the program is found on the right side of this page.

This seminar is free of charge. If you have registered but cannot attend, please inform us about your cancellation by April 16 latest by e-mail (info@digile.fi) – to avoid the no-show fee of 100 € + VAT.

Welcome and let’s wrap our sleeves!

Eric Richert: Evolution of work environments

In a fresh RYM Video Channel presentation Eric Ricter, Board member ja Senior adviser in Optimaze Inc., introduces his five visions for work environments, which are: Factory, Company town, Open platform, Community and Results only. Focusing on actual work process driven solutions and prorotyping before closing the solution is recommended.

Optimize Pattern Book

This presentation gives good insight to Urban Mill’s development approach, too.  Urban Mill’s emerging service model equals to a combination of Ricters’s three last visions, namely Open Platfom, Community and Results (for the benefit of Regional Innovation Ecosystem) driven working environments.

Instead of futurists, let’s be now-ists: Joi Ito at TED2014

Yes, learnt at Urban Mill too: ”Of course, this new model is scary. Bottom-up innovation is chaotic and hard to control,” he says. But it’s a better way. It’s a way that lets you pull resources—both human and technical—when you need them rather than hoarding what you think you’ll need before you start. And we need to educate children to think along on these lines. “Education is what people do to you and learning is what you do for yourself,” says Ito. “You’re not going to be on top of mountain all by yourself with a #2 pencil … What we need to learn is how to learn.”

”Ito urges us to follow a compass rather than a map. Instead of planning out every exact points before you start, allow yourself to make the decisions you need as you go in the general direction of where you need to be.

“I don’t like the word ‘futurist,’” he says. “I think we should be now-ists. Focus on being connected, always learning, fully aware and super present.”

RYM INDOOR: Good results through quick demo projects

Strong showing of Indoor Environment Program at sector top event

2014-03-19 • RYM Oy
The Indoor Climate Seminar conducted by the Indoor Climate Association and Aalto University HVAC Research Group is the biggest construction sector training event in Finland. This year more than 1300 experts from the fields of construction, property management and health care attended. Several introductory speeches made reference to RYM and its Indoor Environment Program.- The four-year research program is now more than halfway through and set goals are being reached – despite being ambitious by design, said Professor Risto Kosonen, Chairman of the Indoor Environment Program Steering Group, in his introductory speech.

The fact that this SHOK instrument is new and unproven has posed an extra challenge. All involved have had to familiarize themselves with it. The aim of this industry-led program is to develop new solutions to create global business and discover new export opportunities related to the indoor environment.

– This is not a product development program, but a research program assessed by TEKES e.g. based on scientific publications. So far, we have produced 150 articles, 20 development projects and four EU-level projects. An international assessment also found the results good.

The Indoor Environment Program aims to investigate fully e.g.
–          how people experience indoor environment conditions
–          how a good indoor climate can be created while aiming for zero energy buildings
–          what is the business logic of a good indoor environment

The four work packages of the program involve 25 key sector companies and the major research institutes. The work packages will carry out several projects networked with each other within and between packages. The total budget of the research program is about €20 million.

User experience-based metrics for a good indoor environment

A good indoor environment is easy to define and describe, but its measurement is another story. Engineering sciences have always been good at measuring millimetres, kilojoules and watts, but perceptions of well-being must be assessed by other means.

– We have developed the so-called 6T model which enables assessing the performance of a property based on experience. The results are extremely promising and development of the model continues, Kosonen explained.

Kosonen - RYMSY_esittely0016

A major focus of the program is thermal comfort and development of different models. Tools for modeling and design have been developed that allow devising a better indoor environment already at the design stage.

To what extent does the indoor environment determine the value of a property? – Research on renovation at Aalto University indicates that it can increase value quite significantly in some cases. In new construction the odds are even better and the potential benefits much greater, Kosonen continued.

Decision making is slow in construction and property management. Practical implementation of new ideas takes long. That is why the Indoor Environment Program has studied and experimented with a quick operational model and various small-scale demo projects. The results have been excellent.

– Demo projects need not be large and expensive. It often suffices to run an experiment on a single space. The results are available immediately and can be evaluated and developed further, Kosonen stressed.

Kosonen is convinced that a good indoor environment energizes, inspires, helps manage various tasks as well as supports social networking thereby improving cooperation.

Maankäyttölehti: Kestävän suunnittelun ja rakentamisen periaatteet Espoossa

Maankäyttölehti 1/2014:

Markku Lappalainen & Anniina Stadius: Kestävän suunnittelun ja rakentamisen periaatteet Espoossa

”Tulevaisuuden Otaniemi on kehitysvaiheessa.
