Joi Ito’s 9 Principles of the Media Lab

In a brief address delivered at the MIT-Knight Civic Media Conference, Media Lab director Joi Ito proposed the ”9 Principles” that will guide the Media Lab’s work under his leadership…some in pointed contrast to those of the Lab’s founder, Nicholas Negroponte.

Ito’s principles are:

1. Disobedience over compliance
2. Pull over push
3. Compasses over maps
4. Emergence over authority
5. Learning over education
6. Resilience over strength
7. Systems over objects
8. Risk over safety
9. Practice over theory

Future of robotics in Finland Seminar 2014

The Future of Robotics in Finland Seminar started last autumn will be organized again this year on Friday 28.11.2014. We will have key note presentations as well as posters and demonstrations from companies and researchers. The theme will be on the Finnish national robotics roadmap. We expect key stake holders will attend and plan the future of robotics in Finland.

Urban Millin käyttäjät muistuttavat: On aika kohdata ihminen! ”Jos ja kun meidän pitää saada aikaan entistä parempaa entistä vähemmillä resursseilla entistä monimutkaisemmassa toimintaympäristössä, ei ratkaisu löydy ”ylhäältä alas” – mallin tehostamisesta. Taylorismi ei enää toimi tulosohjauksessa. Senkin tulee kohdata ihminen. Koko tulosohjauskulttuurimme pitää valjastaa tukemaan hallinnon uutta roolia ja uudella tavalla tekemistä. Tulosohjaus toimii parhaiten, kun se on yksinkertaista, strategista ja mahdollistavaa. Tulossopimuksen pitää olla selkeä ja perustua luottamukseen. Luovat ihmiset pystyvät nimittäin päivittäisessä työssään rakentamaan synergioita paljon tehokkaammin kuin yksikään tulostavoiteasiakirjan laatija pystyy villeimmissä unissaankaan ennustamaan. Antakaamme heille siis siihen mahdollisuus yksityiskohtiin menemisen sijaan!”

Käytettävissä olevat rahalliset resurssimme vähenevät hallinnossa kaiken aikaa. Meissä jokaisessa oleva osaamispääoma sen sijaan ei katoa mihinkään vaan lisääntyy. Kokonaisoptimoinnin edellytyksenä on, että otamme tämän osaamisen yhteiseen käyttöön.

Talouden lihavina vuosina meillä on ollut varaa toimia toisistamme erillään ja hoitaa vain oma tonttimme. Tai näin me ainakin olemme kuvitelleet. Tämä on johtanut siihen, että kaikki toiminta- ja johtamiskulttuurimme osatekijät on viritetty tukemaan yksin tekemistä: tavoitteiden asettaminen, niiden toimeenpano, tulosten seuranta ja niistä palkitseminen. Koska olemme sallineet tämän jatkua liian pitkään, korjaamme nyt, talouden laihoina vuosina, sen satoa. Järjestelmämme on rikki ja se pitää korjata nopeasti! Tarvitsemme sekä ministeriöihin että koko suomalaiseen yhteiskuntaan yhä enemmän yhdessä tekemistä ja kollektiivista vastuunottoa.

On aika kohdata ihminen

Ministeriöissä ollaan parhaillaan monin eri tavoin uudistamassa hallinnon rakenteita ja toimintatapoja. Valtiovarainministeriön ja valtioneuvoston kanslian yhteistyönä OHRA-hankkeessa työstetään yhteisen strategisen agendan muodostamisen mekanismeja, tietopääoman parempaa hyödyntämistä ja yhteisen toimeenpanon tehostamista. Nappi Naapuri on virtuaalinen kyläkartta, jolla voimme kohdata toisemme. Se vapauttaa käyttämättömät resurssit yhteiseksi hyväksi. Nykyaikainen naapurusto on taas vanhanaikaisen kylän kaltainen. Sellainen jossa ei tarvitse jäädä yksin, ja apu löytyy läheltä.

Nappi Naapurin avulla voin kohdata ihmiset minua lähellä – ne joita en muuten tuntisi. Voin pyytää apua koiranhoitoon, etsiä lapsille kavereita tai lastenvahtia, pyytää lainaksi poraa tai tarjota kalastusseuraa, auttaa naapuria sekä päästä eroon kalasopan jämästä.
