During the academic year 2013-14 the Department of Architecture, with the generous support from Asko Foundation, organized a Master Class with professor and architect, Peter Rich at Urban Mill. The Master Class took students to Kigali, Rwanda, to design a public building for an existing need, using participatory planning processes.
The outcomes the Master Class are presented in Artek Helsinki, Eteläesplanadi 18, between 25th of April– 10th of May, 2014
All stakeholders are welcome to the exhibition opening on Thursday, April 24, at 5–7 p.m.
Aalto-yliopiston Arkkitehtuurin laitos järjesti keväällä
2014 maisteritason syventävän mestarikurssin arkkitehti, professori Peter Richin johdolla Urban Millisllä. Kurssi toteutettiin Askon säätiön lahjoituksen turvin.
Kurssin puitteissa matkustettiin Kigaliin, Rwandaan, tutkimaan arkkitehtuurin mahdollisuuksia yhteisöjen kehittämisessä, ja suunnittelemaan julkisia rakennuksia ja tiloja yhdessä paikallisten yhteisöjen kanssa.
Kurssin tulokset ovat esillä Artekin Helsingin myymälässä, Eteläesplanadi 18, 25.4.–10.5.2014.
Tervetuloa näyttelyn avajaisiin torstaina 24.4. klo 17–19.
ITK-konferenssi käynnistyi eilen. Siellä kokeillaan tuoretta tapaa koota tapahtumissa opittua, työstää aineistoa yhdessä eri näkökulmista ja jakaa syntynyt sisältö kollaasina avoimesti muille. Myös Urban Mill aikoo käyttää menetelmää tulevissa tapahtumissaan.
”Konferenssien rikkaus ja ongelma on valtava tarjonta lyhyessä ajassa. Yksittäinen osallistuja jää usein haikailemaan kaikkea sitä, mitä ei ehtinyt kokemaan. Aineistojen lukemiseen ja tallenteiden katsomiseen ei oikein ole aikaa. Entä jos tarjolla olisikin pieniä, kiteytettyjä tunnelmapaloja?
Kollaasi on lähtökohtaisesti dialoginen esitysmuoto. Se rakennetaan kerätyistä havaintoaineistoista, sen toteutus suodattuu tekijöiden aiemman tietämyksen läpi, sen olomuoto saa ilmeen tekijöiden taitojen kautta ja katsoja on aina aktiivisessa, keskustelevassa roolissa: Mistä tämä kollaasi kertoo? Mistä se koostuu? Miten minä sen ymmärrän? Miten minä jatkaisin tai muotoilisin tätä edelleen?
Mobiililaitteilla on helppo kerätä sisältöjä ja luoda niistä jonkinlainen kooste. Mukana voi olla joko vain yhtä aineistolajia tai monen aineistolajin yhdistelmiä. Kollaasi voi olla tekstikatkelmia, kuvien yhdistelmä, katkelmista koottu video ja hyvin monenlaisia erilaisia yhdistelmiä.
Tähän blogiin tuodaan vinkkejä kollaasien tekijöille. Voit tulla hakemaan myös käsityöoppia ITK-torilta ja kaikkein mieluiten tietenkin lyöttäytymällä yhteen toisen konferenssikävijän kanssa.
Kollaasin peruskaava on yksinkertainen:
Hanki kaveri tai pari.
Viritä silmälasit eli ideoi jokin tietty tulokulma havainnoinnille (tämä tekee todella mielenkiintoiseksi kollaasioppimisen, kokeile vaikka), muutaman minuutin ideointi riittää, älä ole turhan vakava, heittäydy.
Määrittele havainnointiaika (vaikka tunti tai puolikas päivä tai tietty foorumiesitys).
Kerää havaintoja haluamallasi tavalla (opeta kaverille uusi tapa).
Pysähdy hetkeksi ja kokoa kollaasi (taitojesi mukaan, pieni on kaunista, joten ei tarvise olla mitään ihmeellistä, ainut reunaehto on, että pystyt julkaisemaan jonnekin nettiin saataville kollaasisi, ryhmän voimaa tähän tai apua ITK-torilla palloilevilta kavereilta, ilmapallojen nurkilla osastolla A8).
Jos vain mahdollista, lisää kollaasiisi tekijätiedot sekä haluamasi CC-lisenssi (ks. lisenssivalitsin). Jos tämä kohta on vielä vaikea, piipahda A8:ssa hankkimassa lisää oppia avointen oppimissisältöjen julkaisemisesta.

The Chair of Public Buildings at the Aalto University, Department of Architecture, is organizing a KIgali Master Class with professor, architect Peter Rich (South Africa) in the spring term of 2014 at Urban Mill, with the generous support from Asko Foundation. Master Class Seminar kick-off was held January 14th on the Urban Scene. Students start their intensive work at Urban Mill on Fri 14.2.2014.
The Master Class will take students to Kigali, capital of Rwanda, to learn about the features of a foreign culture, and to work with disadvantaged local communities. The design task will be a public building for an existing need, using participatory planning processes and collaboration with local people.
The focus of the course is on community empowerment through participation, sustainable design solutions and culturally knowledgeable architecture. The course includes studies on local building traditions and materials, as well as social, economic and climatic characteristics of the local culture.
The course aims at providing the students with a wider perspective and understanding of the processes of the architectural practice when working in various cultural contexts. It also aims at developing the students’ value system and sense of responsibility.

Lauttasaari High School students started their own mini-PDP (Product Development Project) course at Urban Mill. Andy from Design Factory and Natalie from Startup Sauna will run twice a month workshops at Urban Scene. The co-learning and co-design concept is the same as at the Design Factory for the university students. Two companies gave design challenges to students and we’ll see the results of their work at the PDP Gaala next spring.
The gap between secondary schools and universities have been enlarging, especially today when the statistic shows that 65 % of students entering post-secondary school today have no idea what their future careers will entail, partly because many industries have been disrupted and new jobs will be created.
Design Factory and Startup Sauna, Urban Mill’s older brothers and neighbors have joined forces to try to bridge the gap for high school students. Together, they are working with Lauttasaaren Yhteiskoulu and have formulated a curriculum that ties together entrepreneurship and Product Development to give the students an opportunity to be creative, think outside the box and work on real industries projects.
Urban Mill hosted a session for these students on October 9th, and will host many more in the future.
“The space at Urban Mill is wonderful, it is rough, not new, and allows the creative juices to flow” says Andy Clutterbuck, Design Factory’s Coach and co-founder of this high school program. “We know that innovation is not learned in a typical school classroom with row of desks, so open places like Urban Mill, Startup Sauna and Design Factory are crucial for these types of workshops.”
The other co-founder of the program is Natalie Gaudet from Startup Sauna. Together, they bring a great dynamic and different perspective to teach the high school students.
Throughout the academic year, these students will be working in teams and will be solving a problem that real companies have. The final projects will be showcased at Design Factory in April in a Gala.
