Big data ja open data ovat vahvassa nousussa ja niiden hyödyntämismahdollisuudet ovat moninaiset,  kunhan tietää mitä tekee. Niistä jalostettu hyötytieto voi olla kilpailuetu, yrityksen liiketoiminnan ydin tai uusien innovaatioiden lähde.

Niin yritykset, julkinen sektori kuin kuluttajatkin tarvitsevat datan keräämiseen, hallintaan, louhimiseen, jakeluun ja analysointiin liittyviä palveluita – ja tarve tulee tulevaisuudessa entisestään kasvamaan. Organisaatioiden on myös selvitettävä, mikä tieto on sille itselleen arvokasta ja miten sitä voi parhaalla mahdollisella tavalla hyödyntää. Seuraavassa Open Forumissa selvitetään missä nyt ollaan ja mihin ollaan menossa uusien valtavien tietomassojen hyödyntämisessä.

Barcelona is ”iCapital” of Europe

The European Commission has awarded the European Capital of Innovation (”iCapital”) prize to Barcelona (Spain) ”for introducing the use of new technologies to bring the city closer to citizens”. Barcelona was chosen by a panel of independent experts in a close competition with Grenoble (France) and Groningen (The Netherlands). The €500,000 iCapital prize (IP/13/808) will be used to scale up and expand Barcelona’s efforts on innovation. Barcelona was announced as the winner today at the closing ceremony of the Innovation Convention 2014, Europe’s premier innovation event (#EUIC2014).

Máire Geoghegan-Quinn, European Commissioner for Research, Innovation and Science, said: ”Barcelona is a deserving winner of the first iCapital award, for its dedication to using new technology for the benefit of its inhabitants. Still, there were many other great initiatives and proposals, and I want cities and regions to join together and share their experiences. Outstanding initiatives at the local level will contribute to keep turning the European Union into an Innovation Union.”

VIREsmart: Pelillisyys rakennusalalla!?

Puolen sataa henkilöä osalllstui 11.3.2014 VTT:n ja TTY:n järjestämään  ”Pelillisyys rakennusalalla” -seminaariin VTT:n Digitalossa. Mukana oli mm. suunnittelijoita, osastojen vetäjiä, rakennusten/rakennetun ympäristön omistajien edustajia, tutkijoita ja yritysten ohjelmistokehityksen edustajia.

Tilaisuuden järjesti VIREsmart -hanke. VIREsmart kehittää toimintamallin osallistavaksi, vuorovaikutteiseksi suunnit-telukäytännöksi, jonka avulla kestävää kehitystä on mahdollista tarkastella kattavasti päätöksenteon tukena jo suunnittelun alkuvaiheessa. Uusien toimintatapojen tukena hyödynnetään mallintamista ja virtuaaliteknologioita.

Esko Kilpi: The idea of the platform company – how companies grow in the network economy!

Esko Kilpi writes in his blog about emergence of the platform company – and about the logics which are also behind the Urban Mill Open Innovation Platform development:

Gap between network-economy companies and traditional asset leverage driven companies is widening

”The effects of Moore’s law on the growth of the ICT industry and computing are well known. A lesser-known but potentially more weighty law is starting to replace Moore’s law in strategic influence. Metcalfe’s law states that the cost of a network expands linearly with increases in the size of the network, but the value of the network increases exponentially.

When this is combined with Moore’s law, we are in a world where at the same time as the value of the network goes up with its size, the average costs of technology are falling. This is one of the most important business drivers today. The implication is that there is an ever-widening gap between network-economy companies and those driven by traditional asset leverage models. Traditional business economics focus on economies of scale derived from the capital base of the company, which tends to scale linearly.”

A platform company should be as open, as accessible and as supportive as possible, to as many users as possible

Forbes: Building Culture In A Tech Start-Up

”During the last couple weeks, Candida Brush visited with several technology start-up businesses in San Francisco, Boston and Las Vegas. She was particularly interested in how start-ups build a culture in their organizations and whether or not it occurs by default or if it is deliberately designed by the entrepreneurial team.

She had two main take-aways.

1. Intentionally defined culture should be linked to the mission and the values of the company- but they also have to be communicated, memorable and “lived”. This can provide the glue helping a company to sustain during the dynamic ups and downs of the start-up process. At IDEAN, culture is “lived”.

2. Culture is a “strategic” resource leading, invested in and central to growth and expansion. It is strategic, just like technology, brand, or people. At TicketCake, it is core to strategy.

For entrepreneurs starting new businesses, the tendency is to focus on developing the product, and working on the technology. But, culture needs investment and intentional creation just the same.”

We share Candida’s view at the Urban Mill and apply these principles when building our collaborative open innovation culture within the Espoo innovation Garden context.

Yleisöluento 26.3. Laiturilla: Miten Tukholma aikoo miljoonakaupungiksi?

Tukholman kaupunkisuunnittelusta vastaava vs. kaupunkirakentamisjohtaja Niklas Svensson saapuu maaliskuussa Helsingin kaupunkisuunnitteluviraston vieraaksi. Hän pitää avoimen yleisöluennon Laiturilla keskiviikkona 26. maaliskuuta kello 15 alkaen.

Hän kertoo miten Tukholma vastaa kaupunkisuunnittelun keinoin kasvun haasteisiin. Tukholman kaupungin päämääränä on nousta miljoonakaupungiksi vuoteen 2030 mennessä. Tukholmassa on valmistunut yleiskaava nimeltä Promenadstaden ja siinä määritellään kaupungin maankäytön suuret strategiset linjat. Tukholmassa on myös valmistunut ohjelma, jonka tavoitteena on toteuttaa 140 000 asuntoa vuoteen 2030. Tämän tavoitteen toteuttaminen edellyttää kaupunkirakenteen tiivistämistä. Lisäksi Tukholma on päättänyt merkittävistä investoinneista metroverkostonsa laajentamiseen.

RYM Oy’s Renewed Research Strategy – Make Smarter Investment Decisions!

RYM Oy is reviewing its research strategy. Spaces that contribute to wellbeing in the workplace, smart use of resources for competitive advantage and a built environment that attracts investment are the new areas of emphasis of RYM’s Board of Directors. The objective is for companies within the industry to form collaborations focused on these spearhead areas in order to promote high-level, cross-disciplinary research.

“According to our estimates, these particular areas provide companies in this sector with the optimal circumstances for generating new international business opportunities through high-level research. That is, after all, the key objective of the SHOK concept,” emphasizes Ilari Aho, RYM OY’s Chairman of the Board.

Spaces contributing to wellbeing

The Land Use and Building Act requires us to construct safe and healthy buildings; but what if we were to raise the bar much higher than that? How do we create the kind of built environment that truly contributes to the wellbeing of its users? How can we create communal urban spaces? Stress and insomnia are becoming more prevalent in today’s societies; how can we create relaxing and reinvigorating spaces?

Learning is key to improving wellbeing. How can we construct and provide schools, homes and work environments that contribute to and inspire learning?
